What is acquired bra<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>jury?An acquired bra<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>jury can happen after, for example, aroad traffic accident, stroke, bra<strong>in</strong> haemorrhage, <strong>in</strong>fection,fall or blow to the head.Bra<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>jury can happen to anyone at any time <strong>in</strong> life.The effects can be devastat<strong>in</strong>g to the person concerned,as well as their family and friends, who can becomecarers overnight.Due to the many and varied effects of acquired bra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>jury, people often have difficulty liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dependently,work<strong>in</strong>g or return<strong>in</strong>g to education, participat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> socialand leisure activities and ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g family roles orpersonal relationships. And their needs can change overtime, dependent on, amongst other factors, the supportavailable or how long it was between the <strong>in</strong>itial <strong>in</strong>cidentand treatment.The impact of bra<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>jury is often lifelong. In many casespeople with bra<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>jury have no obvious physical disabilitybut the effects can be profound and unique to the <strong>in</strong>dividual.And the statistics speak for themselves…. Each year <strong>in</strong>Ireland it is believed that up to 11,000 people are admittedto hospital with a head <strong>in</strong>jury with a further 10,000 suffer<strong>in</strong>gfrom a stroke. Additionally, we estimate that up to 30,000people <strong>in</strong> Ireland between the ages of 16-65 have anongo<strong>in</strong>g disability follow<strong>in</strong>g a bra<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>jury.Who we are…S<strong>in</strong>ce 1985, <strong>Headway</strong> has brought positive change to thosewith acquired bra<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>jury and their carers though a range ofcommunity-based services tailored to <strong>in</strong>dividual needs. Wehave centres <strong>in</strong> Dubl<strong>in</strong>, Cork, Kerry and Limerick along withan In<strong>format</strong>ion & Education Service <strong>in</strong> the South-East.…and what we doWe offer a range of support services to help people livemore <strong>in</strong>dependent lives after a bra<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>jury.These <strong>in</strong>clude:Psychological Services:In addition to neuro-psychological and psychologicalassessment after an <strong>in</strong>jury, we also provide <strong>in</strong>dividual andgroup neuro-psychological rehabilitation andpsychotherapy session for those affected by acquired bra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>jury and their families.
