What is acquired brain injury?An acquired brain injury can happen after, for example, aroad traffic accident, stroke, brain haemorrhage, infection,fall or blow to the head.Brain injury can happen to anyone at any time in life.The effects can be devastating to the person concerned,as well as their family and friends, who can becomecarers overnight.Due to the many and varied effects of acquired braininjury, people often have difficulty living independently,working or returning to education, participating in socialand leisure activities and maintaining family roles orpersonal relationships. And their needs can change overtime, dependent on, amongst other factors, the supportavailable or how long it was between the initial incidentand treatment.The impact of brain injury is often lifelong. In many casespeople with brain injury have no obvious physical disabilitybut the effects can be profound and unique to the individual.And the statistics speak for themselves…. Each year inIreland it is believed that up to 11,000 people are admittedto hospital with a head injury with a further 10,000 sufferingfrom a stroke. Additionally, we estimate that up to 30,000people in Ireland between the ages of 16-65 have anongoing disability following a brain injury.Who we are…Since 1985, Headway has brought positive change to thosewith acquired brain injury and their carers though a range ofcommunity-based services tailored to individual needs. Wehave centres in Dublin, Cork, Kerry and Limerick along withan Information & Education Service in the South-East.…and what we doWe offer a range of support services to help people livemore independent lives after a brain injury.These include:Psychological Services:In addition to neuro-psychological and psychologicalassessment after an injury, we also provide individual andgroup neuro-psychological rehabilitation andpsychotherapy session for those affected by acquired braininjury and their families. We offer workshops and trainingto other professionals and organizations, and take part inresearch programmes to gain further understanding ofacquired brain injury.04Clondalkin clients accept their sports tournament certificates
Day Services:This brings together people with an injury to take part inactivity programmes designed specifically for them. Groupwork with a creative and rehabilitative approach iscomplemented by clients being encouraged to work towardstheir own goals, such as being able to use public transportor looking after themselves at home.Rehabilitative Training:These programmes involve working with clients on theirsocial, personal and professional skills so that they can liveas independently as possible. The programme modules helpclients to gain insight into the effects of their particular injuryand develop ways to deal with them.Community Access:This individual service helps people to take part in social,leisure and recreational activities in their own communities,by providing support and information to people with acquiredbrain injury, their family and professionals.Supported Employment:A step on from rehabilitative training, clients are able to lookat their options for returning to work with Headway helpingto find them a placement to suit their needs.Information and Publications:We provide support and information to anyone with anacquired brain injury, their carers or family members, and toprofessionals. Our national helpline operates Monday toFriday, 9am to 5pm to provide information on acquired braininjury, the services available to people affected, and alistening ear. Our website and on-line fora provide anothervaluable point of contact and source of information. We alsopromote an awareness of acquired brain injury and Headwayby making visits and presentations to relevant organisations,and distributing information materials.Fundraising:We rely on fundraising and volunteers to bridge the gapbetween our funding from the HSE and other state sources.We run a varied programme of fundraising activities, whichincludes our gala ball. We also have a dedicated band ofsupporters across Ireland who run marathons, bake cakes,hold street collections, run pub quizzes and companies whohelp us reach our targets. We desperately need extra fundsto make sure we can provide the right support services tomeet our clients’ needs.
