What is acquired bra<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>jury?An acquired bra<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>jury can happen after, for example, aroad traffic accident, stroke, bra<strong>in</strong> haemorrhage, <strong>in</strong>fection,fall or blow to the head.Bra<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>jury can happen to anyone at any time <strong>in</strong> life.The effects can be devastat<strong>in</strong>g to the person concerned,as well as their family and friends, who can becomecarers overnight.Due to the many and varied effects of acquired bra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>jury, people often have difficulty liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dependently,work<strong>in</strong>g or return<strong>in</strong>g to education, participat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> socialand leisure activities and ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g family roles orpersonal relationships. And their needs can change overtime, dependent on, amongst other factors, the supportavailable or how long it was between the <strong>in</strong>itial <strong>in</strong>cidentand treatment.The impact of bra<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>jury is often lifelong. In many casespeople with bra<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>jury have no obvious physical disabilitybut the effects can be profound and unique to the <strong>in</strong>dividual.And the statistics speak for themselves…. Each year <strong>in</strong>Ireland it is believed that up to 11,000 people are admittedto hospital with a head <strong>in</strong>jury with a further 10,000 suffer<strong>in</strong>gfrom a stroke. Additionally, we estimate that up to 30,000people <strong>in</strong> Ireland between the ages of 16-65 have anongo<strong>in</strong>g disability follow<strong>in</strong>g a bra<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>jury.Who we are…S<strong>in</strong>ce 1985, <strong>Headway</strong> has brought positive change to thosewith acquired bra<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>jury and their carers though a range ofcommunity-based services tailored to <strong>in</strong>dividual needs. Wehave centres <strong>in</strong> Dubl<strong>in</strong>, Cork, Kerry and Limerick along withan In<strong>format</strong>ion & Education Service <strong>in</strong> the South-East.…and what we doWe offer a range of support services to help people livemore <strong>in</strong>dependent lives after a bra<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>jury.These <strong>in</strong>clude:Psychological Services:In addition to neuro-psychological and psychologicalassessment after an <strong>in</strong>jury, we also provide <strong>in</strong>dividual andgroup neuro-psychological rehabilitation andpsychotherapy session for those affected by acquired bra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>jury and their families. We offer workshops and tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>gto other professionals and organizations, and take part <strong>in</strong>research programmes to ga<strong>in</strong> further understand<strong>in</strong>g ofacquired bra<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>jury.04Clondalk<strong>in</strong> clients accept their sports tournament certificates


Day Services:This br<strong>in</strong>gs together people with an <strong>in</strong>jury to take part <strong>in</strong>activity programmes designed specifically for them. Groupwork with a creative and rehabilitative approach iscomplemented by clients be<strong>in</strong>g encouraged to work towardstheir own goals, such as be<strong>in</strong>g able to use public transportor look<strong>in</strong>g after themselves at home.Rehabilitative Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g:These programmes <strong>in</strong>volve work<strong>in</strong>g with clients on theirsocial, personal and professional skills so that they can liveas <strong>in</strong>dependently as possible. The programme modules helpclients to ga<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>sight <strong>in</strong>to the effects of their particular <strong>in</strong>juryand develop ways to deal with them.Community Access:This <strong>in</strong>dividual service helps people to take part <strong>in</strong> social,leisure and recreational activities <strong>in</strong> their own communities,by provid<strong>in</strong>g support and <strong>in</strong><strong>format</strong>ion to people with acquiredbra<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>jury, their family and professionals.Supported Employment:A step on from rehabilitative tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, clients are able to lookat their options for return<strong>in</strong>g to work with <strong>Headway</strong> help<strong>in</strong>gto f<strong>in</strong>d them a placement to suit their needs.In<strong>format</strong>ion and <strong>Publication</strong>s:We provide support and <strong>in</strong><strong>format</strong>ion to anyone with anacquired bra<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>jury, their carers or family members, and toprofessionals. Our national helpl<strong>in</strong>e operates Monday toFriday, 9am to 5pm to provide <strong>in</strong><strong>format</strong>ion on acquired bra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>jury, the services available to people affected, and alisten<strong>in</strong>g ear. Our website and on-l<strong>in</strong>e fora provide anothervaluable po<strong>in</strong>t of contact and source of <strong>in</strong><strong>format</strong>ion. We alsopromote an awareness of acquired bra<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>jury and <strong>Headway</strong>by mak<strong>in</strong>g visits and presentations to relevant organisations,and distribut<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><strong>format</strong>ion materials.Fundrais<strong>in</strong>g:We rely on fundrais<strong>in</strong>g and volunteers to bridge the gapbetween our fund<strong>in</strong>g from the HSE and other state sources.We run a varied programme of fundrais<strong>in</strong>g activities, which<strong>in</strong>cludes our gala ball. We also have a dedicated band ofsupporters across Ireland who run marathons, bake cakes,hold street collections, run pub quizzes and companies whohelp us reach our targets. We desperately need extra fundsto make sure we can provide the right support services tomeet our clients’ needs.
