MAD HOT Wonderland
The National Ballet of Canada held its sixth annual fundraising gala on June 21, 2011 at the Four Seasons
Centre for the Performing Arts. MAD HOT Wonderland raised over $1 million for the company. The evening
kicked-off with a performance of works selected by Artistic Director Karen Kain exclusively for the gala, including
excerpts from Christopher Wheeldon’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Mikhail Fokine’s Dying Swan,
performed by Principal Dancer Greta Hodgkinson in celebration of her 20th anniversary with the company.
The festivities continued offstage with a Wonderland-themed reception featuring a signature cocktail,
the “White Rabbit,” served in elegant teacups. VIP guests joined the artists of the National Ballet onstage for
a gourmet meal created by star chef Mark McEwan. MAD HOT Wonderland celebrated the powers of
imagination that inform so much of what the National Ballet achieves each year as one of Canada’s leading

Patrons’ Council Season Closing Party:
Promotions and Awards
On June 12, 2011, The National Ballet of Canada
held its annual Patrons’ Council Season Closing
Party at the home of gracious hosts Sherri and Philip
Lieberman. Patrons mingled with the staff and
artists of the National Ballet in celebration of a
tremendous 2010/11 season.
Among the most anticipated elements of the
Season Closing Party is the announcement of dancer
promotions and awards. Artistic Director Karen Kain
shared the following company promotions for the
2011/12 season: Jillian Vanstone was promoted to
Principal Dancer. Elena Lobsanova, McGee Maddox,
Robert Stephen and Brett van Sickle were promoted
to First Soloist. Naoya Ebe and Chelsey Meiss were
promoted to Second Soloist. Skylar Campbell, Shaila
D’Onofrio and Jackson Dwyer were promoted to the
Corps de Ballet from the RBC Apprentice Programme.
Executive Director Kevin Garland announced the
winner of the 2011 David Tory Award: Senior Ballet
Master Peter Ottmann. Named for the late David Tory,
former Vice-Chair of the National Ballet’s Board of
Directors, the award recognizes individuals who best
exemplify values of compassion and professionalism
in conjunction with strong leadership.
Ann Hogarth, Chair of the Patrons’ Council
Committee, presented the 2011 Patron Award of Merit
to Corps de Ballet members Sarah Elena Wolff and
Dylan Tedaldi. The award recognizes one male and
one female member of the Corps de Ballet or the
Apprentice Programme for their extraordinary progress
over the year.
This year, Karen Kain commemorated important
career milestones for Principal Dancer Greta
Hodgkinson and First Soloist Rebekah Rimsay with
Dancer Celebration Awards, sponsored by Birks. Both
Ms. Hodgkinson and Ms. Rimsay celebrated 20 years
with the National Ballet during the 2010/11 season.
