Senior Rugby Season 2009/2010
UWCSEA Senior Rugby team continued
their winning ways taking both the ACSIS
and SEASAC rugby shields in 2010!
They won the ACSIS rugby shield for the
third successive year, scoring close to
100 points and conceding only 14. Two
weeks later they dominated the SEASAC
event, winning all games over the two
day programme and scoring a new SEA-
SAC record final of 31 points to nil over
Alice Smith School. The team amassed
an incredible 140 points and conceded
only 12. Most valuable player awards
were given at each event. The UWCSEA
players who were awarded honours:
ACSIS MVP awards - Angus McWhirter,
Robin Friden, Deigo Garcia and Ross Morris
Earlier in the season, the squad completed
a very intense and successful first
ever rugby camp at Sebana Cove, Malay-
ACSIS Basketball
14&U Boys ‘A’ Team
The ACSIS Division 1 League entertained
supporters with a high standard
of basketball and exciting matches. A
good start saw the team playing superb
team basketball to lose only two matches
in very close games, finishing 4 th on the
ladder and facing an undefeated Catholic
High School in the semi final. We caused
an upset, winning by 21 points and
cruising to the final. The season came
down to a last match against the SAS on
their home court - it would be tough! We
came out pumped and took an early lead.
SAS had a strong second quarter and
went into the half time break ahead by
12 points. We never gave up and played
our best defense of the season to bring
the game back to a 2-point difference
in the final minute of the game. What a
game…fans were out of their seats as
we just ran out of time to take the win. It
was a fantastic season for the team - the
dedication and hard training resulted in
great basketball and a silver medal. Two
players were in the MVP Awards - Charlie
Quin was awarded the MVP of the league
and Hugh Johnston was in the top 10.
Tracy Quin
sia. This was the equivalent of four weeks
of mid week training and was a good test
of the players skills both physically and
mentally. Then in November, the team
travelled to Kuala Lumpur for the ISKL
rugby tens invitational. Not having all
SEASAC / ACSIS team players, the team
did very well in eventually ending up runners
up in the cup tournament.
Having lost some key, experienced players
last season, the team has developed
a great spirit and demonstrated themselves
to be a much more balanced team
across all playing positions. Well done to
14&U Boys ‘B’ Team
The UWCSEA “B” Team had a great
start to the season with a great win over
Tanglin, playing very well as a team. We
had some tough opposition against the
Canadian School and OFS going down
by quite a margin but the boys kept their
spirits high. We had some very close
matches in our remaining games, with
Felician Dumas picking up some very
well deserved MVP votes. I look forward
to seeing all the boys returning next year.
Most of the team were able to participate
in the International Schools Association
of Kuala Lumpur (ISAKL) U13 Championships.
They had a terrific tournament
finishing 5 th overall, with 10 international
schools competing. It was a great experience
for a team with a great future in
basketball ahead of them.
all 28 members of the squad for an excellent
season. Special mention to a great
captains knock by Angus McWhirter, who
has really grown into his role as player
and Captain this season. The players
who represented the College in the four
major tournaments this year are: Angus
McWhirter, Ping Tomczyk, Jerry Newton,
Daniel Olofsson, Aidan McGregor,
Andrew Lee, Riju Maitra, Deigo Garcia
Luna, Mark Cheong, Robin Friden, Silvan
Koortens, Sean Fox, Ross Morris, Ante
Tadic, Shanouk De Silva, Adam Seston,
Declan Maretens and James Holten.
The senior rugby squad continued the
College’s rich tradition of success in this
demanding team sport, which began
in the early 1990’s. The whole squad
continues to be one of the leading lights
for UWCSEA sports teams now and into
the future.
James Hackett
14&U Boys ‘C’ Team
The UWCSEA “C” Team had a great season
with some very promising basketball.
The boys worked very hard at training
which was reflected in their skill level in
the games. They had a great game in the
bronze medal match but were unlucky to
go down to Green View 39 - 31. Congratulations
to both Brandon and Julian Leo
as well as Adrian Chan who were able
to pick up All Star Player Awards in the
ACSIS League.
