Finn &Members of the Therapeutic AssessmentInstituteThis training week is designed <strong>for</strong>psychologists and advanced psychologygraduate students who wish to gain in-depthknowledge about Therapeutic Assessment.The training is a first step <strong>for</strong> individuals whowant to achieve certification in TherapeuticAssessment. Dr. Finn and his colleagueswill lecture on the essential concepts andskills involved in Therapeutic Assessment ofadults, children, adolescents, and couples.Then participants will view video examplespresented by members of the TherapeuticAssessment Institute that illustrate each stepin a Therapeutic Assessment: Initial Sessions,Standardized Test Administration, theExtended Inquiry, Assessment InterventionSessions, Summary/Discussion Sessions, andFollow-up Sessions. Following each didacticportion, attendees will participate in structuredrole-plays in which they will practice theessential skills of Therapeutic Assessment withguidance <strong>from</strong> the workshop faculty. Roleplayswill be tailored to focus on the types ofclients that are of most interest to workshopparticipants. <strong>Attendees</strong> of this training mayapply to take part in the Advanced TrainingWorkshop in October 2011.ObjectivesAt the end of the workshop, participants willbe able to:• discuss the concepts of self-verificationand disintegration anxiety and how theyapply to psychological assessment• discuss how research in neurobiologyrelates to psychological assessment• assist clients in <strong>for</strong>ming questions duringthe initial sessions of a psychologicalassessment• conduct an extended inquiry following astandardized administration of variouspsychological tests• plan and conduct an assessmentintervention session• plan and conduct a summary/discussionsession• describe client-friendly <strong>for</strong>ms of writtenassessment feedback• conduct an assessment follow-up sessionScheduleThe workshop will be held <strong>from</strong> 9:00 a.m. to 5:00p.m. each day <strong>from</strong> May 2 - May 6. Participants shouldhave previous basic training in psychologicaltesting, and will be provided with readingsprior to the workshop to help them prepare.Professionals with previous training andexperience in Therapeutic Assessment arealso encouraged to attend, as the most currentin<strong>for</strong>mation and techniques will be presented inthis training.The Lead PresenterStephen E. Finn, Ph.D., founder of the Center <strong>for</strong>Therapeutic Assessment, is a licensed clinicalpsychologist in practice in Austin, TX, a ClinicalAssistant Professor of Psychology at the Universityof Texas at Austin, and Senior Researcher andDirector of Training at the European Center <strong>for</strong>Therapeutic Assessment at Catholic Universityof Milan, Italy. He has published 50+ articlesand chapters on psychological assessment,psychodiagnosis, and other topics in clinicalpsychology, and is the author of In Our Clients’Shoes: Theory and Techniques of TherapeuticAssessment (Erlbaum, 2007), A Manual <strong>for</strong>Using the MMPI-2 as a Therapeutic Intervention(1996, University of Minnesota Press), and (withHale Martin) Masculinity and Femininity inthe MMPI-2 and MMPI-A (2010, University ofMinnesota Press). Dr. Finn received his Ph.D. inclinical psychology in 1984 <strong>from</strong> the Universityof Minnesota. He is a Fellow of the AmericanPsychological Association and of the <strong>Society</strong> of<strong>Personality</strong> Assessment, <strong>for</strong> which he served asPresident in 2002-2004. Dr. Finn is the recipient ofthe 2011 Bruno Klopfer Award <strong>from</strong> the <strong>Society</strong>of <strong>Personality</strong> Assessment, <strong>for</strong> distinguishedlifetime contributions to the field of personalityassessment.Therapeutic AssessmentTherapeutic Assessment is a semi-structured<strong>for</strong>m of collaborative psychological assessmentdeveloped by Stephen Finn and his colleaguesat the Center <strong>for</strong> Therapeutic Assessment.Therapeutic Assessment can be used <strong>for</strong> many ofthe same purposes as traditional psychologicalassessment: diagnostic clarification, treatmentplanning, and treatment evaluation. However,in addition, research has shown that TherapeuticAssessment can be a powerful therapeuticintervention <strong>for</strong> clients and their families,reducing symptomatology, increasing self-esteemand self-compassion, and promoting positiverelationships between family members.
