SOCIETY FOR PERSONALITY ASSESSMENT
The Society is dedicated to the development of methods of personality assessment,
the advancement of research on their effectiveness, and
the exchange of ideas about the theory and practice of assessment.
Bruno Klopfer and a group of his students founded the Society for Personality Assessment (SPA)
in Essex County, New Jersey. The Society is a collegial organization dedicated to the
advancement of professional personality assessment, to the development of procedures and
concepts for personality assessment and to the ethical and responsible use of these techniques.
Initially incorporated as the Rorschach Institute, Inc., in 1938, the organization was renamed the
Society for Personality Assessment in 1971 to reflect the Society's interest in the entire spectrum of
issues present in contemporary personality assessment and to focus the Society as a special
interest group, concerned with promoting the exchange of ideas and information about personality
assessment in research and practice.
The Society organizes and conducts an Annual Meeting as partial fulfillment of the incorporator's
objective "to provide an annual assembly of sharing research findings and clinical experiences". In
addition, the Society publishes the Journal of Personality Assessment and a newsletter, the
SPA Exchange. Six Awards are presented by the Society:
The BRUNO KLOPFER MEMORIAL AWARD is given for outstanding, long-term professional
contribution to the field of personality assessment. The recipient gives an acceptance presentation.
The SAMUEL J. and ANNE G. BECK AWARD is given for outstanding early career research in
the field of personality assessment. The award is presented in conjunction with the University of
Chicago. The recipient gives an acceptance presentation.
The WALTER G. KLOPFER AWARD is bestowed annually by the Society for Personality
Assessment for distinguished contribution to the literature in personality assessment. Eligible
contributions focus on statistically based research projects. The Journal for Personality
Assessment Editor selects a panel of Consulting Editors to nominate outstanding articles from the
previous year, each of which is then rated by the Editor and Associate Editors. In the event of a tie,
two awards may be given.
The MARTIN MAYMAN AWARD is bestowed annually by the Society for Personality Assessment
for a distinguished contribution to the literature in personality assessment. Eligible contributions
may consist of an outstanding case study, qualitative research project, or theoretical development.
The JPA Editor selects a panel of Consulting Editors to nominate outstanding articles from the
previous year, each of which is then rated by the Editor and Associate Editors. In the event of a tie,
two awards may be given.
The MARGUERITE R. HERTZ MEMORIAL is a tribute to Dr. Hertz for her long-term professional
contributions to personality assessment. The memorial is presented by a distinguished member of
the Society in honor of a deceased eminence from the field of personality assessment. At times,
the presenter also invites other members to join in relating anecdotes of their personal contact with
the honoree.
The MARY S. CERNEY STUDENT AWARD is awarded to the best personality assessment
research paper submitted by a student. This award carries a small stipend to help defray the cost
of attending the Annual Meeting.
2012 BRUNO KLOPFER AWARD
David Shapiro, Ph.D.
Dr. Shapiro is currently Professor Emeritus and Senior Lecturer in Psychology at the The New
School for Social Research in New York City, where he was, at the time of his retirement, Director
of Clinical Training. After graduating with a degree in a degree in Philosophy and Mathematics
from UCLA in 1945, he went on to complete the Ph.D. at USC in 1950. He served as Chief
Psychologist at the Austin Riggs Center from 1952-1960. The majority of Dr. Shapiro's 60 year
career has been spent in the independent practice of psychodynamic psychotherapy, from which
has issued a highly influential series of books, including NEUROTIC STYLES (1965),
AUTONOMY AND RIGID CHARACTER (1981), PSYCHOTHERAPY OF NEUROTIC
CHARACTER (1989), and DYNAMICS OF CHARACTER: SELF-REGULATION IN
PSYCHOTHERAPY (2000).
2012 SAMUEL J. AND ANNE G. BECK AWARD
James Hoelzle, Ph.D.
Dr. Hoelzle received his undergraduate degree in psychology from the University of Illinois,
Urbana-Champaign and completed his doctoral work at the University of Toledo specializing in
Assessment. He has attained extensive training in clinical neuropsychology through a
Neuropsychology Fellowship at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center and Clinical Internship at Rush
University Medical Center. Dr. Hoelzle has conducted a number of studies investigating the core
constructs evaluated by neuropsychological and personality instruments, and whether these factor
structures are replicable across samples and consistent with clinical theories. He is contributing to
a number of ongoing investigations of mild traumatic brain injury at the Minneapolis VA Medical
Center. An additional research interest is how insufficient effort on neuropsychological measures
and exaggerated emotional distress is identified in different clinical settings. Dr. Hoelzle joined
Marquette University in 2010 and teaches undergraduate courses in Cognitive Psychology and
Psychological Testing. At the graduate level, he teaches Clinical Assessment.
2012 MARGUERITE R. HERTZ AWARD
in memory of Anne Anastasi, Ph.D.
Anne Anastasi was an extraordinary woman. She was an internationally recognized expert in
psychological testing and the psychology of individual differences. Anastasi’s world wide acclaim
was due mainly to her extremely popular Psychological Testing textbook, which set a standard of
excellence due to its accuracy, lucidity, and comprehensiveness, and was published in seven
editions—from 1954 to 1997—and translated into many languages. However, she had a
professionally productive career that spanned 70 years and included two other major works on
Differential Psychology (1937, 1958) and Fields of Applied Psychology (1964, 1979), as well as
many influential articles. Anastasi taught psychology courses for almost 50 years, from 1930, as an
instructor at Barnard College, until 1979 when she retired from Fordham University. She was an
acknowledged leader and sought after consultant to various corporations and test publishing
companies. During her lifetime, Anastasi received most of the awards that the American
Psychological Association bestows for outstanding achievement and rose to the highest offices in
several of the professional organizations to which she belonged, including the presidency of the
APA itself (1971-1972). She was only the third woman to be elected to that office, after Mary
Whiton Calkins (1905) and Margaret Floyd Washburn (1921). In 1987, Anastasi’s professional
contributions were recognized by President Ronald Reagan who presented her with the National
Medal of Science, the highest honor that the United States government confers for scientific work.
She is one of only eight psychologists who have received this accolade in the 52 years since this
honor was created.
Early Career Travel Awards
These awards are given annually to encourage and promote the training and education of early
career psychologists in personality assessment, as well as participation in and consumption of
personality assessment research and scholarly activity at the Annual Meeting. Each year, 10
awards in the amount of $500 will be given to support travel to the Annual Meeting. Applicants do
not need to be a presenter at the Annual Meeting or a member of SPA to receive this award. On
the application form (under the Annual meeting tab, General Information link on the web page at
www.personality.org), applicants will need to identify how they hope the SPA Annual Meeting will
benefit their career development as an assessment psychologist. First time attendees of the SPA
Annual Meeting are especially encouraged to apply.
Student Travel Grants
In an effort to encourage training of students and promote research and writing on personality
assessment, SPA offers grants to students who attend the Annual Meeting. Awards are available
for amounts up to $200 to help defray costs of travel to and from the Annual Meeting. Due to
limited funds, grants are small, so students should not expect full reimbursement for their travel.
Eligibility: Students applying for grants must be an SPA student affiliate, or apply to be a student
affiliate when applying for the travel grant. Priority will be given to students for whom other travel
funding is not available.
Application Process: Applications are available on our web page at www.personality.org the
Student tab (SPA Awards link) and the Annual Meeting tab. Applications must be returned to the
SPA office no later than February 15, 2012.
Award Process: Students will be notified about the travel grant prior to the Annual meeting; and
checks can be picked up at the Annual Meeting registration desk.
Student Lunch
SPA will sponsor a lunch for students to have an opportunity to interact with Thomas Widiger,
Ph.D. There will be a nominal fee of $10.00 for the lunch. Register for the lunch on the registration
form. Saturday, March 17, 12:45 pm
Volunteers
As has been the tradition, SPA solicits the help of student volunteers to monitor the continuing
education sessions (workshops, and CE bearing scientific sessions). This task is integral to the
continuing education portion of the conference.
In March 2012, SPA is sponsoring 23 workshops (Wednesday, Thursday morning and Sunday), 17
symposia, roundtable and case discussions, two Master Lectures, one award presentations, and
three lunchtime presentations (Thursday afternoon through Saturday), all offering CE credit.
Consequently, at least 75 student volunteers is vital.
The perk for students who volunteer to monitor a workshop is that they may attend the workshop at
no cost, even if they are not registered to attend the Annual Meeting. The perk for students who
volunteer to assist during the Annual Meeting and monitor a CE scientific session, an award
session, or a Master Lecture is that they can register for the Annual Meeting at the reduced rate of
$50. Contact Paula J. Garber at manager@spaonline.org.
Poster Sessions
At the 2012 SPA Annual Meeting we will be judging the posters that have been accepted for
presentation. Each poster session will be judged separately. A first place and two honorable
mention ribbons will be awarded during each poster session. Thursday, March 15, 6:30 pm, Friday,
March 16, 6:15 pm, and Saturday, March 17, 6:30 pm
On Thursday evening during the reception, SPA members attending the conference who have had
a book published recently are invited to promote their book. This is an opportunity for our SPA
community to become more familiar with your work. Tables will be provided where you can sign
your books and be available for conversation. You will be responsible for providing the books and
all financial transactions. We ask you to donate one book to the Silent Auction. Please contact
SPA Interest Groups
SPA members have expressed an interest in continuing to have an opportunity to interact with
other members who are engaged in personality assessment in similar venues. In 2012 the
following interest groups will be available for your participation:
Assessment Research
Co-Chairs: John E. Kurtz
Friday, March 16, 2012, 12:00 noon
The focus of the Assessment Research Interest Group meeting will be on funding options for
assessment researchers. Participants will describe their experiences with various funding
agencies, and strategies specific to funding projects in assessment.
Collaborative/Therapeutic Assessment
Co-Chairs: Hale Martin, Deborah Tharinger
Friday, March 16, 2012, 12:00 noon
People interested in collaborative and therapeutic assessment will meet to discuss new
developments in the field and support each other. In past years, attendees have shared successes,
quandaries, research interests, and ideas about how to develop and market
collaborative/therapeutic assessment. Everyone is welcome, including students, those new to
collaborative and therapeutic assessment, and those with a great deal of experience and
knowledge.
Forensic Psychology
Co-Chairs: Marvin Acklin, Nancy Kaser-Boyd
Saturday, March 17, 2012, 12:45 pm
The mission of the FIG is developing interest and momentum for the implementation of this vital
area of personality assessment evaluation within the scope of SPA’s overall mission and to
disseminate findings to the membership and Board: to develop membership and Board interests
and resources, support publications in JPA, scientific pre-sentations at annual meetings, and
continuing education workshops.
Psychoanalytic Assessment
Co-Chairs: Charles Peterson, Jed A. Yalof
Saturday, March 17, 2012, 12:45 pm
The mission of the Psychoanalytic Interest Group is to provide SPA members with a focused
opportunity to discuss their interest in psychoanalytic applications to personality assessment. The
group supports the mission of the SPA Board of Trustees by fostering membership interest in the
sharing of direct service, supervisory, and research experiences and initiatives in personality
assessment that are informed by psychoanalytic theory; by discussion of past and contemporary
literature that is foundational to a psychoanalytic understanding of personality assessment; and by
encouraging scientific presentations, posters, continuing education workshops, and publications
that integrate psychoanalytic theory with personality assessment.
Teaching/Training Personality Assessment
Co-Chairs: Virginia Brabender, Joni Mihura
Saturday, March 17, 2012, 12:45 pm
Members of this interest group are dedicated to training the next generation of psychologists in the
proficiency of personality assessment. Academic and field-based trainers are strongly encouraged
to attend. Students and clinicians welcome.
Silent Auction
As is SPA’s tradition, a Silent Auction will be held and again we are asking members to donate
“large ticket” items if at all possible; i.e., a week and/or weekend at your vacation home; a gourmet
dinner for four prepared by a member; season passes to a family theme park; theater or movie
passes; art work; photography; electronics; gift certificates for hotels, stores, restaurants; jewelry,
etc. Contact SPA if you have items or services you wish to donate to the Silent Auction, which
benefits the Student Travel Grants.
