28 competitionsIA winningwinningStory!t was a fine sunny August day andRoland had taken his prized antique brassmicroscope down to the stream at thebottom of the garden. He looked down theancient instrument that his dad had found ata car boot fair and swung the triple turret sothat the highest magnification was in place. He lined it up with the eyepiece and wasamazed at what the old glass lenses revealed. He moved away, rubbed his eyes andlooked carefully again. Just minutes before,he had transferred a drop of water fromthe stream to the empty glass slide on thebrass stage of the microscope. There wasa little indentation in the middle of the slidethat held the water in place. A piece of plantleaf occupied most of the area that he couldsee. He could make out individual cells, even nuclei, and bobbing round the edge herecognised several Daphnia, or water fleas. But it was the little figure of a man that hadmade him look in wonder and with mouthopen, again at the magnified world on his slide. The figure was in a small rowing boat andwas pulling strongly on the miniature oars,Thanks to all of you who entered the Short Storyand Photography competitions that we held in thelast issue of Foresters Magazine. He looked upwardsand jumped back as he spotted the giantlens peering from the sky. He stared for along time and started speaking and wavinghis arms. At least Roland assumed he wasspeaking, as he could not hear anything. The man then shrugged and reached intothe boat to retrieve his picnic. He carefully laidout the blue checked tablecloth, placed thebottle of red wine in the middle and put thepicnic hamper by the side. He sat down andbegan to eat.Just then there was a cry from behindRoland. His mother appeared in the distancecarrying a picnic hamper, blue checkedtablecloth and bottle of red wine. “I thoughtthat we could take a picnic out in the rowingboat as it is such a nice day,” she said.Roland looked up and squinted at the sun, which appeared as a huge lens.Roland looked again down his microscope, just in time to see the two water fleas snatchthe little man and his picnic and gulp themdown in one. “Er, I think we will skip the boattrip if you don’t mind Mum.”Many congratulationsto Rodger, from Inkberrowin Worcestershire, who wins £50 ofWaterstones vouchers.Images:winningphoto!WIN!
