E n d owments. The gift that keeps giving
C e n t ral Maine Medical Center’s history is one of continuous gro w t h
and expansion. For over a century, the hospital has constructed
b u i l d i n g , sadded
services, recruited new physicians to our community
and provided quality health care services to an ever growing segment
of our population.
All of this growth and all of these changes have been made possible
in large part through donations received from our very genero u s
c o m m u n i t y, particularly individuals and businesses who have chosen
to perpetuate their giving through an endowment.
What is an endowment? Broadly defined, an endowment may be
c o n s i d e red an institution’s permanent funds, the earnings fro m
which are used to provide ongoing financial support. A stro n g
endowment fund, prudently managed, is a sign of the hospital’s stability
and capacity to survive economic and regulatory changes and
major fluctuations in patient volumes.

Endowed funds have been restricted by donors to support specific
purposes such as “Free Bed Funds” for the care of indigent patients,
staff education funds, cancer services funds; or left to the unre s t r i c ted
discretion of the Central Maine Healthcare Board of Dire c t o rs.
A named endowment fund offers the opportunity for a donor to
p rovide recognition for themselves or someone else they may wish
to honor in a manner that will remain forever in the annals of
C e n t ral Maine Medical Center. It is a means to continue their annual
support of the hospital long after they are gone.
