Aug 3’ <strong>1852</strong> We started from <strong>the</strong> creek at 9 o’clock and traveled 20 mileswith out water. Good road, but veryP69dusty. Aug. 4 th <strong>1852</strong> Started before breakfast and drove six miles to John Day’sriver and staid till 10 o’clock <strong>the</strong>n drove 24 miles without water. Camped at asmall sulphur spr<strong>in</strong>g. We were three hours <strong>in</strong> water<strong>in</strong>g our stock and <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong>ydid not get enough. Grass very good but burnt <strong>of</strong>f near <strong>the</strong> spr<strong>in</strong>g. Cool, cloudyday. Here we left one wagon. Campedon a small creek at Olney’s Ranch Grass fed down <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> bottom but good on<strong>the</strong> hills. Aug. 10 th <strong>1852</strong> This morn<strong>in</strong>g when we got up we saw an Indian rid<strong>in</strong>g one<strong>of</strong> our horses <strong>of</strong>f. We followed him and found <strong>the</strong> horses We had a long steep hillto descend. Drove 30 miles and camped at a small
