P26have to wait at the ferry a day longer at least. Crossed Looking glass creek andcamped on beaver river. Travelled 18 miles very cold night. Grass short. Wood &water plenty.Wed. May 19 th 1852 Crossed Beaver river. Plumb, ash, & cedar creeks. Passedtwo deserted Pawnee villages and came to a new ford of Loup fork about 13miles below the upper ford We crossed here raised our wagon beds& the thingsin our wagons. & went over without much damage to our provisionsP27Water about 3 ½ feet deep Sandy bottom. Travelled 20 miles Weather cold andclear. Camped on the bank of the river.Thurs May 20 th 1852 Started late Travelled about 20 miles In the forenoon wehad very good roads In the afternoon travelled over low sandy hills campedamong them without wood or water and but little grass. Rain in the afternoon andnight. We got a little sour milk from a train camped near [rd?] for supper.Fri. May 21 st 1852 when we got up we found but six of our horses. Started off inhuntP28of them. Found one about a mile from camp and the other ten miles off. Startedfrom camp at ten. Had very bad roads. Travelled 20 miles very bad roads.Crossed Prairie creek. Camped on the prairie no wood but little water goodgrass. Rain all day.Sat. May 22 nd 1852 Started without our breakfast and drove to Wood creek andstopped to get something to eat. Camped in a [ssin?] of timber on the Platte riverafter traveling about 25 miles. Good grass and timber. Used the Platte water.Cloudy in the forenoon Pleasant in the afterP29noon. Roads muddy from the recent rain.Sun May 23 rd 1852 Very pleasant Travelled 23 miles Muddy road did not stop atnoon. Camped on the Platte. Saw teams on the south side of the river Very goodgrass used the water of the PlatteMon 24 th 1852 Travelled 20 miles Stopped early on buffalo creek. It was bad tocross. The road runs on the Platte bottom Very good roads. Pleasant dayTues May 25 th 1852 It rained a little when we got up. We traveled 21 miles andcamped on the bank of the Platte. Yester
P30day we passed opposite fort Kearney Used buffalo manure for fuel. Sprinkled alittle in the afternoon Poor grass good roads.Wed. May 26 th 1852 Travelled 25 miles good roads Tolerable good grass.Camped on the Platte. Got wood from an island in the river. Teams forded theriver a few miles below this. Sprinkled a little in the afternoon. Warm weather.Pleasant breeze.Thur. May 27 th 1852 Drove 25 miles good roads except some sand bluffs tocross. Followed the bluffs to avoid a badP31swamp camped at a splendid spring of Pure cold water at the head of thePawnee swamp. Weather very warm. Crossed Skunk creek After we stopped, Iwent out hunting and shot at a Buffalo.Fri. May 28 th 1852 Travelled 17 miles and stopped helf past one found a verygood spring. R Farwell and H Farlow killed a Buffalo and we had a feed ofa shower of rain & hailBuffalo meat cooked with the excrement of buffalosSat. May 29 th 1852 We had about six miles of very heavy roads over sand bluffstraveled 22 miles Crossed North Bluff forkP32quite a stream and camped on Bluff creek and had a very good sulphur spring.Nearer very warm and the flies and mosquitos troublesome. Showers in the nightSun. May 30 th 1852 crossed several small creeks and stopped for dinner at avery nice sulphur spring. Camped for the night on rattlesnake creek. A few milesof sandy road Roads very dusty. Weather warmMon. May 31 st 1852 Crossed several small creeks the largest of which was Wolfcreek. We had two miles of very sandy road at [foothill?] on the PlatteP33weather very warm and roads dusty. Good grass. Used the Platte water.Traveled 25 miles.Tues. June 1 st 1852 Passed the “Lone tree” Travelled 27 miles and camped onthe Platte. Crossed Castle creek a wide shallow stream. Had very good roads butvery dusty. Warm weather Grass poor.Wed June 2 nd 1852 We had ten or twelve miles of sandy road. Crossed crabcreek and cobblestone hills. Stopped at noon at the Ancient Bluff ruins.
