Icalled at Isaac Moore’s. after meet<strong>in</strong>g I went home with Alferd Spangler. Tooksupper at Mr. Beesons. Staid all night at Mr. Spangler’s. The wea<strong>the</strong>r waspleasant coolMon. Apr. 19 th <strong>1852</strong> I called a few moments at Geo Scotts <strong>the</strong>n went to NewBoston where I staid wait<strong>in</strong>g for an opportunity to cross <strong>the</strong> river The wea<strong>the</strong>rP6.was cool. I slept <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> wagon. I amused myself read<strong>in</strong>g Milton: and bought aShakespeare,Tues. Apr.20 th <strong>1852</strong> To day we should have crossed <strong>the</strong> river had not <strong>the</strong> w<strong>in</strong>dblew so hard. Consequently we waited <strong>in</strong> New Boston. I did a share <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>cook<strong>in</strong>g. And amused myself read<strong>in</strong>g. Slept <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> wagon. It ra<strong>in</strong>ed quite hard <strong>in</strong><strong>the</strong> night. The wea<strong>the</strong>r is cold We have paid 25 cts per bushel for corn. And 18 ¾for oats. 50 cents per hundred for Hay 8 cts per Doz for Eggs.P7Wed. Apr.21 st <strong>1852</strong> Our wagons and six horses crossed <strong>the</strong> Mississippi river thismorn<strong>in</strong>g. And I waited with three horses and crossed about noon. I overtook <strong>the</strong>wagons about five miles on <strong>the</strong> road. We camped for <strong>the</strong> night about ten milesfrom <strong>the</strong> Mississippi <strong>in</strong> Des Mo<strong>in</strong>es Co., Iowa. We paid 25 cents per bushel foroats. The roads were tolerable much better than we expected to f<strong>in</strong>d. Thecountry was wet. Five spr<strong>in</strong>gs issued from <strong>the</strong> Bluffs. Wea<strong>the</strong>r cloudy but no ra<strong>in</strong>.Cool.P8Thur. Apr.22 nd <strong>1852</strong> We started from camp about seven passed over high wetprairie. Roads quite muddy and evidence <strong>of</strong> hav<strong>in</strong>g been much worse. Gra<strong>in</strong> veryscrace.[sic] Corn forty cents per bushel. We passed through Mt. Pleasant <strong>the</strong>county seat <strong>of</strong> Henry Co., a pretty town <strong>of</strong> about eight hundred <strong>in</strong>habitants andcamped two or three miles west <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> place. The wea<strong>the</strong>r was changeable. Verywarm and aga<strong>in</strong> cool. Travelled 25 miles.Apr. Fri 23 rd <strong>1852</strong> Left our camp<strong>in</strong>g place about seven AM. Passed throughTrenton.P9crossed Skunk river at Deedsville. Took d<strong>in</strong>ner on <strong>the</strong> west side. In <strong>the</strong> forenoonwe had good roads. PM quite bad. Wea<strong>the</strong>r cloudy with ra<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> PM. Came toPleasant Pla<strong>in</strong>s, where we wished to stop but could not f<strong>in</strong>d gra<strong>in</strong> enough <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>place to feed our horses. Went on and <strong>in</strong> a mud hole <strong>the</strong> s<strong>in</strong>gletrees to onewagon broke and left <strong>the</strong> wagon <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> [mud] , Borrowed doubletrees and wentabout a mile from <strong>the</strong> road and found gra<strong>in</strong> and stabl<strong>in</strong>g for
