Swyden, who headed the taskforce that guided the Kangaroos fromNAIA to NCAA Division I. A lifetime resident of Kansas City and a graduate of Paseo HighSchool, Swyden was honored in 1993 with the Golden Torch Award, one of the highest honorsbestowed by <strong>UMKC</strong> upon an individual.Dr. Brad WarrickTeam PhysicianDr. Grant SmithTeam DentistIn 2008, <strong>UMKC</strong> <strong>Athletics</strong> extended an agreement with the Goppert Trinity Family Care Center that ensures Kangaroo student-athletes receivein-house medical coverage, daily sick calls and increased game coverage. Dr. Brad Warrick, an internal medicine doctor who specializes insports medicine, serves as the team physician for <strong>UMKC</strong> <strong>Athletics</strong>.Dr. Grant Smith, meanwhile, serves as the team dentist for the Kangaroos.The Dutton Brookfield Strength and Conditioning Center at <strong>UMKC</strong>’s SwinneyRecreation Center was officially dedicated on Sept. 22, 2004.Led by Director of Strength and Conditioning Trumain Carroll, the BrookfieldCenter is designed to help enhance <strong>UMKC</strong> student-athletes’ levels of performancewhile significantly reducing the chances for injuries. The benefit of performingstructured strength and power training throughout the entire year willgive student-athletes the opportunity to reach new levels of physical development.The center contains free weights, plus platforms, benches and machines andthe latest cardiovascular equipment. In the summer of 2006, the area purchasedthe latest Sports Motion system to give student-athletes the videoanalysis needed to improve their techniques.The Student-Athlete Academic Services Office (SASSO) provides a variety of supportservices to ensure student-athletes acquire the tools to meet their academic,professional and personal goals. SASSO integrates its services within the missionof the University of Missouri–Kansas City and the <strong>Athletics</strong> Department to promotethe overall development of the student-athletes. To foster the positive developmentof student-athletes, SASSO provides a comprehensive support unit which includes:academic counseling, degree progress monitoring, assessment, tutoring,computer access, academic and individual skill development, mentoring, individualizedstudy plans and knowledge of on-campus resources.The Student-Athlete Support Services Office (SASSO) was founded in 1987 in conjunctionwith the <strong>UMKC</strong> Center for Academic Development (CAD). The Center forAcademic Development oversees the Student-Athlete Academic Services Office,and has dual reporting responsibility to both the Divisions of Student and AcademicAffairs.Located in the Swinney Recreation Center, SASSO was renovated and expandedin 2005 and updated in 2008. The academic unit includes a study and computerroom, quiet tutor spaces and several offices for personnel.38
