ethinking designSolar Lily PadsScottish firm ZM Architecture have developed a solar energy idea thatmimics the lily pad. Designed for the Glasgow River, they will float, soaking up the suns rays during the day to send electricity to the city, while during the day the design will attract waterfront attention. This design is still in the proposal stage like many other biomimicryenergy generation ideas. At the moment the Glasgow council has beenconsidering a small test pilot with the Glasgow Science Centre 10 . Thisdesign allows solar panels to take on a more aesthetic approach to thestandard application as panels to the roofs of houses.http://idesignawards.com/winner/07/zoom.php?eid=1007-08&uid=3072 Fig 6Fig 7WhalePower CorpThe shape of the Humpback Whales film is being studied at the momentin order to design a better fan blade, and also a better wind turbine.Scientists have discovered that the tubercles on the Humpbacksfins, result in 32 percent less drag when compared to a smooth fin.this results in the fan blade moving through the air with a lot less energyneeded for the rotation 11 .WhalePower is continuing work to apply the idea to wind turbines, butthe process at the moment is slow because of certification and testing, but when they are put in use, the blades will produce more energythan other wind turbines 12 .http://www.whalepower.com/drupal/Fig 89 http://s-m-i-t.com/#grow_targetFig 1,2: http://www.treehugger.com/files/2006/10/biologically_in.phpFig 3: http://www.biopowersystems.com/Fig 4,5: http://s-m-i-t.com/#grow_target10 http://www.inhabitat.com/2008/05/12/solar-lily-pads-planned-for-glasgows-clyde-river/11 http://www.treehugger.com/files/2008/03/biomimicry-fan-blades-mimic-humpback-fins.php12 http://www.whalepower.com/drupal/Fig 6,7: http://idesignawards.com/winner/07/zoom.php?eid=1007-08&uid=3072 Fig 9Fig 8,9: http://www.whalepower.com/drupal/
