Benchmark aga<strong>in</strong>st selected external codes <strong>and</strong> st<strong>and</strong>ardsGovernment-m<strong>and</strong>ated or other external codes are unlikely to be a viable alternative tovoluntary bus<strong>in</strong>ess pr<strong>in</strong>ciples developed by the company itself, although these may havesignificant value as external benchmarks. Some companies choose to express public support forone or more of these external codes. It is for an <strong>in</strong>dividual company or <strong>in</strong>dustry sector to decidewhat the most useful benchmark codes are <strong>and</strong> to develop their own underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g of howbus<strong>in</strong>ess pr<strong>in</strong>ciples relate to external codes <strong>and</strong> guidel<strong>in</strong>es, <strong>and</strong> to societal expectations.Support for external codes can be time-consum<strong>in</strong>g, s<strong>in</strong>ce they may imply additionalcommitments. Companies should be selective, bear<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d their own needs. ICC can provideguidance on the implications of support<strong>in</strong>g some of the exist<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>ternational code offer<strong>in</strong>gs.Set up <strong>in</strong>ternal monitor<strong>in</strong>gCorporate policies <strong>and</strong> their implementation need to be kept under constant review to keepabreast of developments <strong>in</strong> technology <strong>and</strong> scientific underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g, customer needs <strong>and</strong> widersocietal expectations. It is for the company to assess its social performance through <strong>in</strong>ternalconsultation <strong>and</strong> periodic review by management. Equally, it is the company’s responsibility tocheck that its bus<strong>in</strong>ess pr<strong>in</strong>ciples are be<strong>in</strong>g acted upon. The extent <strong>and</strong> manner of externalreport<strong>in</strong>g of performance is, of course, for the company to decide. Given the wide differencesbetween <strong>in</strong>dustries <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividual companies, the contents of such reports are bound to vary.Several <strong>in</strong>ternational <strong>in</strong>itiatives are be<strong>in</strong>g undertaken to develop a common yardstick forvoluntary report<strong>in</strong>g of the economic, environmental <strong>and</strong> social impact of company activity.An example is the work be<strong>in</strong>g done by the Global Report<strong>in</strong>g Initiative, which is supported bythe UN <strong>and</strong> other <strong>in</strong>ternational organizations, to agree on a set of common core <strong>in</strong>dicators.They would enable <strong>in</strong>vestors <strong>and</strong> other stakeholders to make global comparisons. Companiesshould reta<strong>in</strong> the flexibility to adapt such voluntary <strong>in</strong>dicators to their particular circumstances.A key way for companies to create confidence <strong>and</strong> trust <strong>in</strong> their commitment to <strong>responsible</strong>bus<strong>in</strong>ess conduct is to provide timely <strong>and</strong> reliable <strong>in</strong>formation on their f<strong>in</strong>ancial, environmental<strong>and</strong> social performance <strong>and</strong> to communicate this to their stakeholders. Markets all over theworld provide examples of companies who enjoy susta<strong>in</strong>ed public goodwill <strong>and</strong> respect bydo<strong>in</strong>g this successfully.
