A basis for actionThe primacy of <strong>in</strong>dividual company pr<strong>in</strong>ciplesFor <strong>in</strong>dividual companies, by far the most important considerations are whether to make theirvoluntary bus<strong>in</strong>ess pr<strong>in</strong>ciples explicit, what these should be <strong>and</strong> how to ensure that they areacted upon. Legal implications of <strong>in</strong>dividual company pr<strong>in</strong>ciples should also be considered, s<strong>in</strong>ceempty promises or claims could expose the company to liability. The pr<strong>in</strong>ciples themselves, <strong>and</strong>associated arrangements, are likely to be attuned to the needs <strong>and</strong> circumstances of theparticular company: its history, its culture, geographical location, size, sector, <strong>and</strong> so on. Indevis<strong>in</strong>g them, there will be much to learn from the good practice of other companies <strong>and</strong> fromguidel<strong>in</strong>es developed by bus<strong>in</strong>ess associations, whether national or <strong>in</strong>ternational.A framework for bus<strong>in</strong>ess pr<strong>in</strong>ciplesCodes, <strong>and</strong> various resolutions <strong>and</strong> declarations by governmental organizations, can serve asuseful benchmarks for large companies, as well as small <strong>and</strong> medium-sized enterprises (SMEs),<strong>in</strong> the development of their own <strong>in</strong>dividual formal pr<strong>in</strong>ciples <strong>and</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess conduct. Companies must therefore be giveneffective freedom of choice to subscribe to such codes.
