Page Four — December 4, 2011Saint Anthony Catholic ChurchScripture Reflections for theSecond Sunday of AdventLIVINGtheWORDSunday,December 4, 2011TODAY'S FOCUS:ROADWORK IN PROGRESSPreparing for Christmas is one way we remindourselves that we are always in a state of preparingto celebrate the coming of Jesus Christ. Opening upa roadway for the Lord to come into our lives is anever-ending process. The heart can be resistant toexpansion.• FIRST READINGPrepare the way of the Lord (Isaiah 40:1-5, 9-11).Jerusalem had been destroyed and the elite of Israel hadbeen carried off into exile. They began to wonderwhether God was less powerful than the gods of Babylon. They even wondered whether God was so angry at themthat He would never forgive them. The first words of thisprophecy respond to these questions. Israel would beconsoled and comforted. God only wanted to heal her andrestore her to the promised land.• SECOND READINGWe await new heavens and a new earth (2 Peter 3:8-14).In the early Church, Christians believed that Jesus wouldreturn in glory within a very short time. But time wentby, and still Jesus did not arrive. Some Christians beganto ask whether Jesus ever would return. Was somethingwrong? In this letter we hear that the Lord will returnat the end of time, and that His delay is not due to Hisforgetting His promises. Rather, God is giving us extratime for conversion. Jesus wants to give us all theopportunity to turn our lives around and dedicateourselves to the ways of the Lord. He wants our salvationand not our destruction. We should use that timecarefully in order to be ready when the end (whetherour end or the end of the world) does come.• GOSPELMake straight the paths of the Lord (Mark 1:1-8).John is called the new Elijah who would prepare the waysof the Lord and make straight the paths before Him. Hewould preach conversion to the people of Israel so thatthey would be able to open their hearts to Jesus whenHe arrived. John practiced a baptism of conversion thatcleansed the people of their sins. This might have been apractice that John learned from Qumran, a community ofcelibate monks near the Dead Sea that was awaiting theDay of the Lord. They practiced ceremonial ablutions topurify themselves from their sins. Yet, while Johnpracticed this type of baptism, he also pointed to anothertype of Baptism — not only washed free of our sins butalso gave us the gift of the Holy Spirit. It is the Holy Spiritthat makes us children of God, heirs to the Kingdom ofGod, and brothers and sisters of Jesus.• REFLECTIONThere was a little boy coming home from church andbeing asked what the preacher had spoken about. Thechurch used the King James Version of the scriptures andthe preacher had spent some time on the reading fromIsaiah. But that translation began: “Comfort ye, comfortye, my people, Saith your God.” In response to hisparents’ inquiry, the child said, “It was just lovely. Thepriest told us how God is saying, ‘Come to tea, come totea, my people.’”While Isaiah’s message is certainly comforting, withGod telling the prophet to speak tenderly and tell an exilepeople that all is forgiven, that the punishment for sin hasrun its course, these words are not the equivalent of aninvitation to a relaxing cup of tea. Now as then, they serveas an invitation to get to work, to remove any obstaclethat prevents God from coming into our hearts. Thismeans that we have to get our hearts into shape, and ourvoices have to become willing to announce that God livesand comes with power to save.John the Baptist remains a model for us today. Hespoke out boldly, calling people to prepare a way forthe Lord, which was a call to conversion and innertransformation. We are to take in this same message, first as listeners, then as heralds ourselves, witnessingto family, friends, and any who will listen that Jesusdesires to come more fully in our lives.Mon., Dec. 5thIs 35:1-10Lk 5:17-26Tues., Dec. 6thIs 40:1-11Mt 18:12-14READINGS FOR THE WEEKWed., Dec. 7thIs 40:25-31Mt 11:28-30Thurs., Dec. 8thGn 3:9-15, 20 Eph 1:3-6,11-12; Lk 1:26-38Fri., Dec. 9thIs 48:17-19Mt 11:16-19Monday:
