A Stewardship Parish, Sharing Our God-Given Gifts in Service
July 17, 2011, Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Good Seeds
Take time this week to reflect and pray over
today’s Reading’s: Wisdom 12:13, 16-19; Psalm
86; Romans 8:26-27; Matthew 13:24-43.
Today Jesus continues to speak to his followers
using parables. What a rich treasure we are given
today in three parables about the kingdom of
heaven! The kingdom is likened to a man sowing
good seed in his field, a mustard seed, and yeast
mixed with flour. As they did last week, today the
disciples press Jesus for an interpretation of one of
the parables—the parable of the
man sowing good seed. Lest we
think that these parables are
simply amusing little anecdotes,
Jesus’ interpretation should be
seen for what it is—a warning.
Wailing and grinding of teeth in
a fiery furnace await those who
are children of the evil one.
This parable points to the
struggle for today’s believer.
Sometimes, through sin, we
sow weeds and prevent the love
of Christ from blossoming. Let today’s Gospel
help put us back on track. Let us recommit
ourselves to prepare for the last days, the harvest,
by blossoming as the good seeds we were created
in love to be.
To help prepare for the Seventeenth Sunday in
Ordinary Time: 1 Kings 3:5,7-12; Psalm 119;
Romans 8:28-30; Matthew 13:44-52.
From the Pastor
DEAR FAMILY OF ASCENSION,
Summer Greetings!
In your good name and mine, I welcome Fr. Gnanasekaram to our
parish this weekend. Fr. Frank is joining us as part of the
Archdiocesan annual Summer Mission Appeal of behalf of the
Diocese of Mannar, Sri Lanka. Currently, Fr. Frank is an Associate
Pastor at St. Catherine of Sienna Church in New York. Welcome,
Fr. Frank, to our Parish Family of Ascension.
I would like to welcome and thank our newest Ministers of our
Parish, GREETERS. They had their first meeting last Sunday.
Thanks to all of you for coming forward for this Hospitality
Ministry. It is much appreciated and your ministry will greatly
benefit our weekend guests. I thank you and our Stewardship Team
for initiating this effort.
I thank Bill Skalitzky, Bill Komala, Rich Hillengas and the painting
crew for their good, hard and tedious work at Holy Angels School.
Thanks for meeting the challenge head-on and making it happen. It
wasn’t easy work, but you did it as promised. Thanks for giving up
of a lot your time in getting it done. Thanks, everybody!
Carol Ford, Mary Stapleton and their many helpers of all ages put
together another successful Ascension PADS Summer Lunch.
Thank your for your compassion and thoughtfulness, especially in
light of the summer heat and humidity.
One of our parish families, the Mosha family, moved back to
Tanzania where they were originally from. Before they left,
Raymond came by to see me on behalf of his wife, Joyce, and their
three children to say thanks for ALL that Ascension Parish did for
them since their arrival five years ago. Raymond shared that they
felt right at home very shortly after their arrival from Tanzania. He
also said they were met with such friendliness and openness, as if
they had been here for ages. Raymond and Joyce wanted me to
know how special the 600 block of Gunderson was to them and how
much they appreciated the attention and dedication that was given to
the liturgies here. I was so glad that he stopped to say good-bye, and
I really want to pass on their good words about you, Our Family of
Ascension, as your friendly and enthusiastic spirit continues inside
and outside our Church. I thank you! May God bless you ALL for
your continuing good works!!
Well now, we know why the Chicago Police Dept.
beefed up their security at the Taste of Chicago. The
two most popular menu items were turkey legs and
various chicken parts. With this knowledge they must
have suspected much more “fowl play” than
previous years.
This new week brings with it the opening night of
Backyard Theology 2011. This Tuesday, July 19, at
7:30 p.m. in the Pine Room, our weekend assistant
Fr. Jerry Bleem, O.F.M., who besides being a priest,
is an artist and teacher, will be our presenter. Fr.
Bleem’s talk is Beholding the Spiritual in Art. As we
have come to know Fr. Jerry as a wonderful homilist,
we can now see and hear the artist teacher in him as
he shares his experience of faith and art. I hope you
can join us.
This coming Saturday, the 23rd, is the next PADS
Summer Lunch in the Pine Room. If you can be a
part of the team for this lunch it would be greatly
appreciated. You can be part of the wait staff, you
could donate food or drinks, you could be part of the
clean-up crew. Please call Carol Ford at 848-3971
and tell her what you would like to do. Thank you in
advance for your compassion. The PADS basket
remains in the East Ave. vestibule for any donated
toiletries as well as the PADS box for socks,
underwear, tee shirts, caps etc. Thank you.
Theology on Tap continues this week Tuesday for
our parishioners in their 20s and 30s (married or
single) over at St. Edmund’s Murphy Hall which is
at 200 S. Oak Park Ave beginning at 7:30 p.m. The
speaker is Jim Ivers; Jim and I went to school
together. Jim’s topic is Faith: A Context for our
Blessings and Burdens. Jim has experienced many a
burden in his own life; I highly recommend him to
our 20-30 crowd.
I am getting several new dates on my calendar for
our many sacramental celebrations, plus prep
sessions, which reminds me that this strange weather
month is moving right along. I ask ALL Parish
Ministries and Organizations to please continue to
submit your Space Requests for single or parish
events for the 2011-12 calendar year. You can pick
download one from our website:
www.ascensionchurch.com. Rosemarie thanks you
and I thank you!
Getting back to our 2011 Priest Convocation, on
Tuesday morning June 28, Msgr. Michael Meher
gave a very affirmative talk on priesthood. I felt he
was very encouraging and supportive about our
priestly vocation and extremely positive in the good
things that priest do in their ministry. I just felt it
was a very good, affirming talk and I wasn’t the only
one who asked for a copy. We walked out of the talk
affirmed. In the afternoon, our speaker was Dr.
Elizabeth Nagel, who is a Scripture Professor at
Mundelein Seminary. Again, a fine talk in a series
of good talks. She reminded us to really study the
scriptures for our weekend homily, explain the
passages, and tell how they can be lived out in our
daily Christian journey as best we can. Dr. Nagel
stressed once again that the Liturgy of the Word at
Mass is as important as the Liturgy of the Eucharist.
Overall, I enjoyed the convocation with the priestly
camaraderie being #1. Our next one will be in
Spring of 2014.
Elsewhere in our DOME is a summary of last
weekend’s Offertory collection. Thank your for your
generosity. Thank you for ALL that you do for our
Family of Ascension.
I pray for you every day.
I see where there is some doubt whether or not the
Joffrey Ballet’s Season can be salvaged. The mood
is not optimistic that a settlement can be reached. I
think this is a good time for a “leap of faith.”
Have a good week.
Ascension Mission Statement
Ascension Parish in Oak Park is a Catholic community called to proclaim, to reflect on, and to live the
Gospel. Our desire to follow Jesus inspires us to continue the rich traditions of our faith by supporting
education for children and adults, celebrating the liturgical life of the community, and serving those in need
within our Parish and beyond. Following the example of Jesus, we value the diversity of gifts in all people
and all are welcome.
SERVICE
Each month the third graders of Ascension School have decorated placemats for PADS for the 4 th Sunday
of the month dinner. Ascension Parish is responsible for preparing and serving the dinner. Linda Dunn,
Carol Doody, and I have coordinated this for the past few years. I have seen how much the guests appreciate
the children’s art work. Often a guest will take their placemat with them as a keepsake. I am hoping that next
year we can expand this project and make placemats that can be used during our PADS Summer Lunch
Program.
Here are the comments from my 3 rd grade class regarding our PADS placemats:
1. Do you think the guests at the meal enjoyed receiving the placemats? How does it show them that we
care about them?
We think that the guests love them and are glad that we take the time to make the placemats.
The placemats are more welcoming than just the table.
It shows that we took time and effort to show that we care.
2. Why do you think it is important to show that we care about people who are in need?
The guests go through a lot in their lives and everyone is important and it is good to think of other people.
Maybe it will help them feel better and good.
3. What have you learned at Ascension about the importance of being a person of service?
By helping others you feel good inside.
When you do something nice for someone they are nice in return.
4. Can you imagine what it must be like to not have a home? What are your thoughts?
In the winter it must be super cold.
If you do not have food you could starve and that would not be nice.
Submitted by Ascension 3rd grade teachers, Colleen Bracco and Beth White, on behalf of their class.
Back Yard Theology
This Tuesday
This summer’s Back Yard Theology series
focuses on faith and art. We begin this Tuesday,
July 19, with Beholding the Spiritual in Art.
Though previous ages found the most-acclaimed
artists producing work for the Church, the
relationship between art and religion is currently
more tenuous. Religious art tends to be illustrative;
artists are accused of borrowing religious motives
and using them in ways that believers find
offensive. For the past five years, Jerry Bleem,
O.F.M., has written a monthly column for U. S.
Catholic magazine entitled Eye of the Beholder.
The simple format--an image of an artwork with a
brief text--seeks to be respectful of the piece's
production while teasing out its spiritual themes.
Friar Jerry will discuss his experience of writing
this column and the perspectives he brings as a
priest, artist and teacher. Plan to be there at 7:30
p.m. in the Pine Room.
Coming up Tuesday, July 26, The Elusive
Parish Update Information
If you receive our “Parish E-Newsletter” you
know that we are starting to work on creating a
new Parish Directory. We have found in going
through our parish data is that so much of the
information has changed. So in an effort to make
any publication as accurate as possible, we are
asking everyone to please inform us of the
following:
Has your address changed?
Do you still use a land line phone? If not, can
we have a cell phone number where we can reach
you?
Did you have a baby that we don’t list as part of
your family?
Do we have a current email address for you or
your family members? Teens?
Have your children moved out of the house? (If
your adult children are in the area, they should
register on their own. It will be cheaper for them
when they want to get married.)
As you can tell, we are looking for any updated
information that you can provide. Please call or
Feast of Faith
THE PRAYER OVER THE GIFTS
In the liturgy of the 1570 Missal, this prayer
was called the “secret” prayer. It was “secret” not
because its content was mysterious, but because it
was prayed in silence by the priest, who only
recited the conclusion aloud: . . . per omnia
saecula saeculorum. With the reforms of the
Second Vatican Council, we again hear these rich
prayers spoken aloud. They remind us to prepare
ourselves for what is to happen in the Eucharistic
Prayer, for it is not only the bread and wine that
will be transformed.
The Prayer Over the Gifts is a prayer for
transformation, an expression, in a few words, of
all that we hope that the liturgy will accomplish in
our lives. We ask God to accept the gifts we
present, and to change us even as God hallows the
bread and wine. As we listen carefully to the
Prayer Over the Gifts, we are reminded of what it
is that we seek in the Eucharist: to be made holy;
to be drawn closer to God; to come to eternal joy,
unity, peace, and salvation.
