World-class Manufacturing PlantAjax Engineered Fasteners’ boltmaking plant is on a 9.6 hectare (23 acre) site in the Melbournesuburb of Braeside, Victoria. The plant converts 10,000 tonnes of steel per year into 200 millionfasteners of all descriptions.Ajax’s competitive advantage comes from 13 large cold forging machines that produce fastenersranging from M10 (3/8) diameter to M24 (1”) diameter. This includes the only two 1” boltmakers inAustralia. Supplementing this capability is a battery of small cold heading machines that turn out boltsand screws from M2.5 (3/32) to M10 (3/8). This provides the broadest cold forging capability of anyfastener manufacturer in Australia.Other in-house processes, such as heat treatment, electroplating, material preparation and wiredrawing, all complement the forging machines to provide an integrated manufacturing system. Thismeans that Ajax can closely control processes to ensure the quality of the fi nished part.High-speed machining – courtesy of Pfi ffnerindexing machines – allows Ajax to produceintricate parts for the automotive brake industry, and Mectron qualifying machines enable usto remove non-conforming parts from themanufacturing stream.Precision Automotive ComponentsAjax EF is the largest manufacturer of high quality, engineered fasteners to the Australianautomotive industry. Components are made for use in engine, driveline, vehicle assembly and brakesystems. Since entering the automotive market 50 years ago, Ajax has developed processes thatutilize highly effi cient boltmaking and surface coating technology to produce a wide range of criticalcomponents. Most major car manufacturers in Australia and many of their sub-contractors rely on thequality of Ajax automotive parts.Supply to automotive customers is supported by QS9000 quality techniques and manufacturingprocesses that deliver the best value. This capability has been recognized around the world andopened up exciting new markets in the USA, China and Thailand. Some of the key elements of theprocess are:* CAD/CAM techniques for tool design* Indexing machines for more intricate parts* Surface coating to Ford and GM standards* PPAP capability* NATA-certifi ed laboratory* Kanban delivery service* Prototyping facilities* Fastener survey and re-engineering services* Turnkey and full service supply programs

Earthmoving FastenersEarthmoving fasteners are forged from high-grade alloy steels and are used to secure the cuttingedge and crawler components of earthmoving equipment. These bolts and nuts have excellentstrength and wear resistance and are manufactured to suit the specifi cations of the major crawlerequipment OEMs, such as Caterpillar, Komatsu, Hitachi and John Deere. Ajax’s core competenciesof precision cold forging and skillful heat treatment have made our products one of the most soughtafterbrands in a market that places a lot of importance on reliability and integrity. Our manufacturing methods regularly achieve strengths upward of 180,000 PSI whilst maintainingthe critical levels of ductility and impact resistance. Fatigue resistance is provided courtesy of rolledthreads and rounded UNRC and UNRF thread roots.Over 80% of all earthmoving fasteners made at our Braeside plant are exported to over 30countries, with our biggest markets being Asia, the Middle East, Canada and the USA.Products in this category include:Domed Head Track BoltsRaised Countersunk Plow BoltsHex Head Segment Bolts‘D’ Head Segment BoltsSplit Master Link BoltsA9 Super High Tensile Deep Hex Head BoltsHex and Square Track NutsFully-certified High Tensile BoltsHigh tensile bolts manufactured to Australian and International Standards have long been theproduct that Ajax has been proudest to put its headmark on. Ajax-manufactured high tensile bolts arecold forged to precision tolerances from a special BHP alloy and carefully heat treated to ensure thebest possible combination of strength and ductility.A full certifi cation service – free of charge – is offered for the entire range. Certifi cation coversmechanical properties, chemical composition and other tests if specifi ed. Each batch of product has aunique Quality Assurance Reference Number (QARN), which is printed on the box label. It is throughthis number that we can trace the manufacturing process back to the raw material.Products are available in the following main categories:Metric AS 4291.1 Property Class 8.8* AS 1110 / ISO 4014 M6 – M24 diameter* Furnace black or zinc plated* Metric Coarse threadsUnifi ed SAE J 429 Grade 5 from ¼ to 7/16,Grade 8 from ½ to 1” diameter* AS2465 / ANSI B18.2.1 ¼ - 1” diameter* Furnace black or zinc plated* UNC and UNF threads

Innovative ProductsSMARTBOLT TMFor most general engineering applications, the variable relationship betweentorque and tension is an acceptable method of measuring preload in a bolt. However, in critical bolted joints, the error in this method (+/- 25%) is too muchto ensure the integrity of the assembly, and a far more accurate method isneeded. In response, Ajax developed the SMARTBOLT TM tension-sensingsystemSMARTBOLT TM technology can be fi tted to existing bolts, which meansthat there is no need for engineering changes to the original structure ordesign. SMARTBOLTTM is reusable and provides an accuracy of +/- 3-5% onmeasurements taken subsequent to the initial tensioning. This allows in-placemonitoring and provides a picture of how the forces are distributed within ajoint.DOGSCREW TMONESIDE TMAFI was instrumental in the development of the successful ONESIDE TMblind structural fastening system. Most systems and fasteners developed forbolting into hollow sections require some form of alteration or deformation thatrestricts the ability of the fastener to carry a full structural load.ONESIDE TM is a simple solution to a complex problem. The fastener is notcompromised in anyway, which means the full structural integrity of the joint ismaintained. The system is proving very popular in the USA, where it is idealfor connecting reinforcing bars to communication towers. One of the challenges accepted by Ajax was to fi nd a better way ofsecuring railway lines to timber sleepers. Dog spikes - favoured for manyyears - had the drawbacks of being unsafe to install, were unreliable andaccelerated deterioration of the sleeper. DOGSCREW TM reduces timberdamage and extends sleeper life by creating a fi rm connection between thesleeper and the plate. Maintenance costs are signifi cant’y lower than whentraditional dog spikes are used.AJAX ENGINEERED FASTENERSAUTOMOTIVE78-88 Mills Road Braeside VIC 3195PH: (03) 9586 6613Fax: (03) 9587 7902E-mail: papadopoulos@ajaxfast.com.auAJAX ENGINEERED FASTENERSINDUSTRIAL AND EXPORT78-88 Mills Road Braeside VIC 3195PH: (03) 9586 6633Fax: (03) 9589 6840E-mail: kettlewell@ajaxfast.com.auA Division of Global Engineered FastenersABN 95 091 040 989www.ajaxfast.com.auDon’t Risk it!SPECIFY AJAX
