Dr. Hema Rao continued from page 32by Cindy BryantDr. Hema Rao ExpandsPractice to Include Triveni,An Aveda Spa“Definitely not a typical doctor’s office.”Triveni Spa, an Aveda Salon, is not an ordinary spathat helps you look pretty on the surface. Instead, TriveniSpa was conceived to help you actually look and feelbeautiful, naturally.Triveni in Sanskrit, the ancient Indian language, means“confluence of three rivers” and refers to a site where thethree rivers of ancient India meet to create a nexus with nearmysticalhealing and rejuvenation powers. Generations ofIndians have made the trip to Triveni to bathe in these sacredwaters for renewal of the mind, body and spirit.Dr. Hema Rao, a local oncologist in Vero Beach, has expanded her medical practice to include this spaand wellness center. Dr. Rao has always focused ontreating each patient as a whole person, not just theirdiagnosis or disease. She feels that knowledge andinformation of all aspects of one’s self is very importantat all stages of the cancer journey. A comprehensivecomplementary program in addition to the mainstreammedical treatment can help patients throughthe healing process and improve their quality of life.I sat down with her daughter, Swathi Rao, whowas instrumental in bringing to life her mother’sdream. In less than 10 days, Swathi was able toexpand and transform Dr. Rao’s medical office intoan aromatic, comforting setting for both patients and spaguests. Definitely not your typical doctor’s office or spa atall but the best of both worlds. When Dr. Rao first started her practice, the typicalpatient was aged 52. Then, she became concerned as shestarted seeing a number of patients in their 20s, so shebegan to investigate why. One possible reason is theincreased exposure to chemicals and other artificial elements.Given that the skin is the body’s largest organ, anything that we put on our body is inevitably absorbedinternally, such as the petrochemicals in most bath andbeauty products. Dr. Rao did a considerable amount of research before focusing onAveda. Aveda is one of the largest purchasers of organic ingredients in the personalcare industry. 90% of their essential oils and 89% of their raw herbal ingredients arecertified organic.Triveni Spa offers a variety of services including hair color, style and treatment services, facials, body treatments, including manicures and pedicures, depilatory services, massage& spa treatments, as well as Aveda’s full range of hair, skin and makeup products. All services incorporate aromatherapy and reflexology so clients begin with aconsultation to find out what oils will best suit you. Those oils are used during yoursalon and spa treatments and products can be customized so that you can incorporatethem in your daily life.As a certified yoga teacher, Dr. Rao has always incorporated complementary healingmodalities such as yoga and massage into her practice. She also hosts lectures andworkshops on a wide range of wellness topics. Adding a salon and spa that uses onlythe most natural products is the next step in her vision of providing the best care forthe mind, body and spirit.Kudos to Swathi for making her mother’s dream come true.Visit Dr. Hema Rao and Swathi at Triveni Spa, located at 985 37th Place, VeroBeach, Florida. MY BRAIN TUMORDon’t Let Your Handicap Stop Your Dreams! In May, 2004 I was diagnosed witha brain tumor. I under went 8 hours ofbrain surgery which left me completelydeaf in my right ear. Right after thesurgery we got hit with two hurricanes,Frances and Jeanne, while I was tryingto recover, and had no power for 14days, more trauma. Then I developedfluid on my brain and found I developedscar tissue in the form of a cyston my brain. I had to go back to thehospital in October, 2004. After thesurgery I was unable to walk withoutfalling down for several years becausemy balance was off. I found out thecause several years later, it was becausethe nerve tissues in my deaf ear werepartially alive, therefore, it did notcompensate for my partially deaf leftear to give me back my balance. Thetwo years following the brain surgery Iwent through invasive treatments totry and deaden the nerves to give memy balance back. Since I had beenextremely active all my life, thisbecame a daily challenge to get aroundwithout falling over and very traumaticto me to not be able to do the thingsI had enjoyed doing. In April, 2006 a new set of doctorsat the University of Miami told meabout a BAHA. A Bone AnchoredHearing Aid which is implanted inyour skull. In October, 2006 the doctorsperformed the surgery and placedthe BAHA in my skull. The doctorswould not fit me for the BAHA untilApril of 2007. This whole experiencewas a life altering situation for mewhereas I had to live with this for therest of my life. So, here I am deaf inone ear, 50% deaf in the other ear, poorbalance and falling on my butt all thetime. Determined, I kept undergoinghours of therapy and rehabilitation. After this major change in my lifeand everything I have been though, knowing life is too short and younever know when it is going to end, made me more determined to go aftermy dream. I have always wanted myown business.During my childhood my parentshad a catering business and I alwaysloved to cook and make people happywith food. The store is a recreationof the mom and pop market that Igrew up with and a lot of people knowabout because it reminds them of theirlocal corner market. The store alsoresembles an old European marketwith sounds of Italian music in thebackground and the smells of foodcooking. I get help from Eli Rich, whois a retired food chemist. With hisexperience as a food chemist and culinaryeducation he knows how ingredientscome together to make a particularflavor. Eli has a scientific approachwhere I have a home grown approach. The combination of the two of ustogether really works.
