DENTAL CAREBy Richard Huot, DDS, Indian River Dentistry andColleen Sanders-Symanski, RN, Healthy Nutrition, LLCDental Care and DiabetesDiabetics receive a lotof information on how tocare and manage their diseaseon topics such as glucose monitoring,nutrition, foot care, and eye care/exams.Unfortunately, not enough routineeducation addresses oral health care andthe risk of gum disease that diabetics facewhen blood sugar levels are high. Toomuch glucose (sugar) in the blood fromdiabetes can cause pain, infection, delayedhealing, and other problems in themouth. Plaque comes from eating foodsthat contain sugars or starches. When diabetesis not controlled, glucose levels inyour saliva help germs and plaque grow.Plaque can also cause gum disease(gingivitis/periodontal disease), andpeople with diabetes are two timesmore likely to develop gum disease.Gingivitis is the first stage of gumdisease and causes red, swollen andbleeding gums. Treatment includes dailybrushing and flossing and regular dentalcleanings. Periodontitis is a more severeform of gum disease and causes:• red, swollen, and bleeding gums• gums that have pulled awayfrom the teeth• pus between the teeth and gums• bad breath• loose teeth• gum abscessesKeep your Mouth Healthyby Taking These Steps• Keep your blood glucose numberscontrolled. Know your A1C.• Eat healthy and follow the meal planordered by your physician.• Brush your teeth with an ADArecommended toothpaste that containsfluoride.• Brush first thing in the morning,before going to bed, and after eachmeal and snack.• Use an electric toothbrush or softtoothbrush.• Gently brush along the gum line, aswell as all surfaces of your teeth.• Brush your tongue and cheeks, asthey also trap plaque• Change your toothbrush every 3months or sooner if the brush looksworn or the bristles spread out.• Ask your dentist about using an antiplaqueor anti-gingivitis mouth rinse tocontrol plaque and prevent gum disease.• Use dental floss to clean in betweenyour teeth at least once a day. Flossinghelps prevent plaque from buildingup on your teeth.• When flossing, slide the floss up anddown and then curve it around thebase of each tooth and use cleansections of floss as you move fromtooth to tooth. Or use a dental pickor brush—thin tools designed to cleanbetween the teeth. You can buy theseat drug or grocery stores.• If you wear dentures, keep themclean by cleaning them with antibacterialtablets. Have them adjustedif they become loose or uncomfortable.• Call your dentist right away if youhave any signs of mouth problems.• See your dentist at least twice/yearfor a cleaning, preventive maintenancecheck, and oral exam.
