Sc. thesis work is a faculty-directed, independent study of a suitable applied problem, subject or research topic.<strong>The</strong> topic of research is to be selected in consultation with a student’s research advisor subject to approval by thestudent’s GAC. <strong>The</strong> designated research advisor provides guidance to the student in the execution of the thesis. Aco-advisor may also be appointed, if needed.<strong>The</strong> following specific guidelines apply:1. A student may not begin full-fledged work on the thesis until at least 8 credit hours of approved Master of Sciencecoursework have been completed. After starting the project, the student must register for the Master <strong>The</strong>sis Course(CHEG 599) for each semester until the research is completed and approved.2. Constraints due to proprietary concerns must be agreed to by the student, his/her employer/sponsor, the facultymember(s) involved in the research project, and the student’s research advisor. Confidentiality agreements must beadhered to.On completion of the thesis work, the student is required to submit a written report followed by oral presentationand defense of the thesis before the GAC and the defense coordinator. <strong>The</strong> thesis will be graded on a Pass/Failbasis.Page 46
