8 We Mourn the Loss of Janet Pitegoff Janet Pitegoff, a beloved member of the HARC Family for many years, supporting our cause in a multitude of ways, passed away on April 13, 2008. We will greatly miss her presence and we extend our condolences to her son, Robert, in HARC’s Life Enrichment Program, her son, John and daughter-in-law, Anne Martha of West Hart- HARC’s 57th Annual Meeting and Community Awards HARC honored seven community leaders who made significant contributions to HARC’s mission, at its 57th Annual Meeting on June 10, 2008. The meeting was held at The Greater Hartford Jaycees Community Boathouse. Those honored included: 2008 Employer of the Year Hartford Hospital 2008 Community Partner of the Year AFCAMP (African and Caribbean American Parents of Children with Disabilities) 2008 Educator of the Year Brian Morin of Wethersfield 2008 Advocates of the Year Barbara and Bob Cloonan of West Hartford 2008 Volunteer of the Year Luis A. Rosario of Wethersfield 2008 Charless Whitham Staff Extra Mile Award Cathleen Barbosa of West Hartford 2008 Young Philanthropist Award Cordelia Brady of West Hartford HARC also honored two 25-year employees, Eileen Able of Manchester and Tom Barry of New Britain, with plaques and Governor’s proclamations. Young Philanthropists Early Training in Charitable Giving Lasts a Lifetime We want to applaud once again, the group of young philanthropists who have emerged in support of HARC and its mission. We also thank their families, teachers, and scout troop leaders for encouraging their charitable acts - for it really is something which must be taught, and nurtured. When children are constantly bombarded with media messages extoling the latest, greatest gizmo and the importance of looking out for No. 1, it is incredibly touching and poignant to see a small figure step forward offering donations from a birthday party given in lieu of presents. Or young classmates forming teams and raising dollars for the Walkathon in honor of their friend, sibling or relative. Or a child pleading with his mother to help him make a lemonade stand - and specifying where the proceeds should be directed. Logan Galvan, Ryan Palmer, Dougie and Mallory Barnard, Kayla Deitz, Matthew Zaffino, Caroline Zaffino, Ally Pappa and Samantha Preiser, Brownie Troop 6090 in Simsbury, Miranda Fitzpatrick-Fortier and Cordelia Brady are a few of the young people we have seen recently, and there are others. They are the leaders of tomorrow, who aren’t waiting for tomorrow - but are starting now. Lessons on helping others can be started even before a child reaches kindergarten age. In fact the earlier started the better. • Start in small ways that are meaningful for the child - perhaps putting coins in the collection plate at church. • Let children decide where their money will be donated - and help them by discussing possibilities. • If they don’t want to give money, try volunteering, perhaps by doing a chore for a neighbor or grandparent. • Or suggest they do something nice for someone as a gift to you. These, and other ways that you might think of, can help children start down the path of philanthropic ways. Dr. Stephen Becker Honored by NASW with Public Citizen Award Dr. Stephen Becker was honored and recognized at the National Association of Social Workers / Connecticut Chapter (NASW/CT) Annual Awards Dinner on June 19, 2008, when he was presented with their Public Citizen of the Year Award. Dr. Becker was nominated for the award by MaryJoan Picone of Glastonbury, for his work in “breaking through barriers and building bridges to inclusion.” Patrick J. Johnson Jr., NASW Treasurer and President of Oak Hill, spoke at the award presentation, citing Dr. Becker’s dedication to advocacy for social justice, safety, and creation of the best quality of life possible for people with developmental disabilities, their families, and those who serve them. Two Family Funds Announced at Donor Reception Two Family Funds were announced at HARC’s Donor Reception on May 31, 2008. Biagio “Billy” Ciotto presented a $5,000 check to Dr. Stephen Becker for the Biagio “Billy” and Jeanne Ciotto Family Fund. Also announced was the Phyllis Rose Kirsche Fund. We tremendously appreciate the generosity of the Ciotto and Kirsche / Habesch families. HARC Participants and Staff Enjoy Annual Dinner Dance The 2008 Annual HARC Participant Dinner Dance, held at the Rocky Hill Marriott on June 25, 2008 was enjoyed by all in attendance. DJ Dale was in rare form and had everyone up and dancing! Knights of Columbus Donate Proceeds of Tootsie Roll Drive On March 18, Richard Boccia and Frank Gozzo presented a check from the Newington Chapter of Knights of Columbus (KOC) for over $1,100 to Dr. Stephen Becker, for HARC’s 2008 Annual Fund. The check came from the proceeds of the KOC Tootsie Roll Drive. Many thanks to the Newington Knights of Columbus for their support! 9
