Early Training in Char<strong>it</strong>able Giving<br />
Lasts a Lifetime<br />
We want to applaud once again, the group<br />
of young philanthropists <strong>who</strong> have emerged<br />
in support of HARC and <strong>it</strong>s mission. We<br />
also thank their families, teachers, and scout<br />
troop leaders for encouraging their char<strong>it</strong>able<br />
acts - for <strong>it</strong> really is something which must be<br />
taught, and nurtured.<br />
When children are constantly bombarded<br />
w<strong>it</strong>h media messages extoling the latest,<br />
greatest gizmo and the importance of looking<br />
out for No. 1, <strong>it</strong> is incredibly touching and<br />
poignant to see a small figure step forward<br />
offering donations from a birthday party<br />
given in lieu of presents. Or young classmates<br />
forming teams and raising dollars for<br />
the Walkathon in honor of their friend, sibling<br />
or relative. Or a child pleading w<strong>it</strong>h his<br />
mother to help him make a lemonade stand -<br />
and specifying where the proceeds should be<br />
directed.<br />

Cordelia Brady are a few of the young<br />
<strong>people</strong> we have seen recently, and there are<br />
others.<br />
<strong>The</strong>y are the leaders of tomorrow, <strong>who</strong> aren’t<br />
wa<strong>it</strong>ing for tomorrow - but are starting now.<br />
Lessons on helping others can be started even<br />
before a child reaches kindergarten age. In<br />
fact the earlier started the better.<br />
• Start in small ways that are meaningful for the<br />
child - perhaps putting coins in the collection plate<br />
at church.<br />
• Let children decide where their money will be<br />
donated - and help them by discussing possibil<strong>it</strong>ies.<br />
• If they don’t want to give money, try volunteering,<br />
perhaps by doing a chore for a neighbor or<br />
grandparent.<br />
• Or suggest they do something nice for someone as<br />
a gift to you.<br />
<strong>The</strong>se, and other ways that you might think<br />
of, can help children start down the path of<br />
philanthropic ways.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Staff Milestone Dinner was held on June<br />
18, 2008 at the Rockey Hill Marriott. In total,<br />

Dr. Stephen Becker Honored by<br />
NASW w<strong>it</strong>h Public C<strong>it</strong>izen Award<br />
Dr. Stephen Becker was honored and recognized<br />
at the National Association of Social<br />
Workers / Connecticut Chapter (NASW/CT)<br />
Annual Awards Dinner on June 19, 2008,<br />
when he was presented w<strong>it</strong>h their Public<br />
C<strong>it</strong>izen of the Year Award. Dr. Becker was<br />
nominated for the award by MaryJoan Picone<br />
of Glastonbury, for his work in “breaking<br />
through barriers and building bridges to<br />
inclusion.”<br />
Patrick J. Johnson Jr., NASW Treasurer and<br />
President of Oak Hill, spoke at the award<br />
presentation, c<strong>it</strong>ing Dr. Becker’s dedication<br />
to advocacy for social justice, safety, and<br />
creation of the best qual<strong>it</strong>y of life possible for<br />
<strong>people</strong> w<strong>it</strong>h developmental disabil<strong>it</strong>ies, their<br />
families, and those <strong>who</strong> serve them.<br />
Two Family Funds Announced at<br />
Donor Reception<br />
Two Family Funds were announced at<br />
HARC’s Donor Reception on May 31, 2008.<br />
Biagio “Billy” Ciotto presented a $5,000<br />
check to Dr. Stephen Becker for the Biagio<br />
“Billy” and Jeanne Ciotto Family Fund. Also<br />
announced was the Phyllis Rose Kirsche<br />
Fund. We tremendously appreciate the generos<strong>it</strong>y<br />
of the Ciotto and Kirsche / Habesch<br />
families.<br />

HARC Participants and Staff Enjoy<br />
Annual Dinner Dance<br />
<strong>The</strong> 2008 Annual HARC Participant Dinner<br />
Dance, held at the Rocky Hill Marriott on<br />
June 25, 2008 was enjoyed by all in attendance.<br />
DJ Dale was in rare form and had<br />
everyone up and dancing!<br />
Knights of Columbus Donate<br />
Proceeds of Tootsie Roll Drive<br />
On March 18, Richard Boccia and Frank<br />
Gozzo presented a check from the Newington<br />
Chapter of Knights of Columbus (KOC)<br />
for over $1,100 to Dr. Stephen Becker, for<br />
HARC’s 2008 Annual Fund. <strong>The</strong> check<br />
came from the proceeds of the KOC Tootsie<br />
Roll Drive. Many thanks to the Newington<br />
Knights of Columbus for their support!<br />
