Hans Kliemand was born on 22 ndJuly 1922 in the artists’ colony of Hellerauin Dresden (Germany). After attendingthe Richter School of Art, from whichhe graduated as a scientific illustrator, in1940 he embarked on a course of studyat the State University of Art and Academyof Fine Arts in Dresden. In 1941 howeverhe was called up for military serviceand had to go to war aged 18 as a medicalorderly. After the end of the war hetravelled to Liechtenstein for the first timeto visit his brother Alfons, who had lived inVaduz since the beginning of the 1930s asa stamp dealer. With Alfons’s help he resumedhis studies at the Nürnberg Schoolof Arts and Crafts, successfully completingthem in 1950. For some years he livedin Weissenburg (Bavaria), maintaining hisown printing studio there. During his manyvisits to Vaduz in this period he produceddrawings (including some for the yearbookof the Principality of Liechtenstein HistoricalAssociation), portraits and stamp designs, together with his first small-formatetchings on fauna and flora and also localviews which have enjoyed great popularityin Liechtenstein principally as Christmascards. In 1961 he made Liechtensteinhis permanent home. Nine years later hebecame a member of the first Associationof Graphic Artists in Liechtenstein andtook part in exhibitions in the country. On3 rd March 1976 Hans Kliemand died in theSt. Gallen Hospital, to which he had beentaken after a serious cycling accident. The two stamps show the pen-and-inkdrawings “View of Vaduz” (face value CHF1.00) and “View into the Rhine Valley”(face value CHF 1.90). The stamps, designed by Heinz Schädler, have beenkept deliberately uncomplicated, the backgroundcolour having been chosen to accordwith the original paper. The stampshave been printed by a combination of offsetand steel engraving and are being issuedin two 10-stamp sheetlets. Bothdrawings are from the deceased’s estate(the Evi Kliemand collection).FDCArt.-Nr. 213.05.52

Young animals of the Alpine regionArt.-Nr. 213.07.39Series of stamps relating to a country’s animalworld exist in profusion. This applies toLiechtenstein too. Designs featuring younganimals however are a rarity. The “Younganimals of the Alpine region” set designedby Erich Beck of Triesenberg depicts four examplesof such young mammals native toLiechtenstein’s mountain world. The “Ibex”,Capra ibex (face value CHF 0.85) is a goatspecies common in the Alps which canclimb to altitudes of up to 3,500 m abovesea-level. The adult male ibex carries imposingcurved horns up to a metre long; the femaleibex has only short and slightly curvedhorns. The “Chamois”, Rupicapra rupicapra(face value CHF 1.00) is another goat-likespecies; it is found throughout the Alpineregion and also in some parts of the Balkansand Carpathians. Both males and femalescarry circular horns which can growto up to 25 centimetres in length and arenot shed in winter. Frequent mountain hikersin particular will be familiar with the shy“Marmot”, Marmota (face value CHF 1.40)because of its distinctive whistle, used forcommunicating and giving warnings withinthe colony. The European marmot, at homein the Alps, the Carpathians, the Tatras andthe Pyrenees, lives in extended corridor systems10 to 70 metres in length. By the way:the “Marmot” stamp is also Liechtenstein’sofficial SEPAC (Small European Postal AdministrationsCooperation) stamp for 2013.The “Alpine hare”, Lepus timidus (facevalue CHF 1.90) found all over Europe belongsto the hare family. It is noted first andforemost for the fact that its fur changesFDCaccording to region from a greyish-brownsummer coat to a white winter one. Thelength of its ears also adapts to the differentclimatic conditions. The colder the habitat, the shorter the ears. The “Young animalsof the Alpine region” issue has beenproduced in practical self-adhesive form.85Fürstentum LiechtensteinE. Circle of Liechtenstein Collectors Publication Series No. 15Liechtenstein Postmarks – Part 2With Volume 15 in its Publication Series theCircle of Liechtenstein Collectors (RLS) revisitsa topic which has been the subject ofmany previous publications, including somein this very Series. In fact Volume 2 in theSeries, by Gerhard W. Blümel, published aslong ago as 1964 and out of print for manyyears, was concerned with the subject of“Liechtenstein Postmarks”. In 2002 thissubject underwent a fundamental revisionin Volume 10 of the RLS Publication Seriesby the authors of that volume, Karl-HeinzBauer and Dr. Karlheinz Metzler. After morethan 10 years which have seen the appearanceof a large number of new postmarks itwas now time to update this revision and –in accordance with the wishes of many collectors– to augment it with a complete reworkingof the subject of special orcommemorative postmarks. The RLS ispleased to have been able to obtainthe services of the authors Karl-HeinzBauer and Dr. Karlheinz Metzler againfor the purpose. The two authors have based their updatingand reworking on the original version ofthese chapters of the handbook and havealso adopted the original numberingscheme, which has been augmented accordingly. This means that the handbooktoo can be appropriately updated and augmented.Volume 15 in the RLS PublicationSeries is intended to make the two authors’comprehensive research done over manyyears accessible to a wider public.Only available in German.15
