Healthy for Life Child Health ChecksOn Thursday 4th October, <strong>Brewarrina</strong>Aboriginal Health Service conducted aHealthy for Life Child Health Checks <strong>Road</strong><strong>Show</strong> at their grounds to promote childhealth checks and physical activity, mainly aimed at Aboriginaland Torres Strait Islander children. Attendance on the day consisted of forty twoAboriginal males and thirty eight Aboriginal females with twenty four being beingbetween 0-4 years of age and 56 being between 5-14 years of age.The <strong>Travelling</strong> <strong>Road</strong> <strong>Show</strong> Team team comprised: Nova Peris - Dual Olympian,Bo De La Cruz - Touch Football player for Australia, Nathan Blacklock - NRLRepresentative for Australia, David Peachey - NRL Representative forAustralia, George Rose - NRL Manly Sea Eagles Player and ChanceBunce - NRL West Tigers Player.Eighty nine children registered on the daywith forty one children who hadalready had a child health check.Thirty nine children whowill be followed up byBAHS to see a doctoron clinic days andnine children whoregistered on theday but did not gothrough with thecheck up.The day waspromotedthrough out thecommunity withflyers being givento preschools,childcare and<strong>Brewarrina</strong>Central School.Flyers were alsodistributed in thepost as well asaround the town.<strong>Road</strong> <strong>Show</strong>Walgett Aboriginal Medical Service Co-operative Ltd.37 Pitt St (PO Box 396) Walgett NSW 2832Ph: (02) 6828 1611 Fax: (02) 6828 1201 Email: walgettams@bigpond.com


Healthy for Life Child Health ChecksBAHS and <strong>WAMS</strong> Officers on the daywere: Hellen Mannix - Community Nurse,Tammy Childs - Receptionist, Enid Steadman- Aboriginal Health Worker, Chris Boney -Handyperson, Skye Duncan - EPC Nurse, Georgiana Butt - Sexual Health, TrevorSimpson - Mental Health and Richard Simpson - Ear Health. Rodney Robbins (Orana HavenManager) represented Orana Haven.Rodney Robbins was in charge of the BBQ, with the assistance of Chris Boney, Trevor andRichard Simpson. This allowed the clinic staff to concentrate on the Child Health Checks.Sporting activities were held at the local park, where the <strong>Road</strong> <strong>Show</strong> Team wasassisted by Rick Black from Sport and Recreation. This worked in well, as it allowedthe children to be playing with the <strong>Road</strong> <strong>Show</strong> Team and helped minimize thecrowd of people within BAHS grounds.The children who presented on the day, requiredconsent to have the child health checkattended. Following their completionof the health checks they receivedHealthy Child promotion packs,which were supplied by the<strong>Road</strong> <strong>Show</strong> Team.Amy Gordon, fromthe local <strong>Brewarrina</strong>Newspaper attendedthe day and wasbusy taking photos,which were laterdisplayed in the localnewspaper.Following from theday, many positivecomments weregiven from peoplein the community.<strong>Road</strong> <strong>Show</strong>Dubbo Secretariat Colour Copy Shop - www.dubsec.com.au
