Theuse of herbs in our daily diet is one way ofassisting the body and keeping spirits highthroughout the dark winter months.Sage is a versatile herb which is veryeasy to grow. The Bookof Stonesby Philip ListerHaworth’s spooky past really doesgo back into the mists of antiquity, and for a long time before Halloweenenjoyed its resurgence in popularity;spooky things were going on inHaworth. One of Haworth’s former residents,Emily Bronte, was well aware of thiswhen her heroine of WutheringHeights, Catherine Earnshaw, challenges her lover, Heathcliffe, withthe words, “ We’ve braved its ghostsoften together, and dared each otherto stand amongst the graves.” .Andwhat better time to stand amongstthe graves than when the wildmoor around the village no longerwears its cloak of purple heather, the October mists swirl around thecobweb covered old lamps on MainStreet, and the bats once againflutter in the chilly autumn skies overthe gravestones. Haworth’s famoussteeply cobbled Main Street washedand blackened by the Pennine rainand polished over the years by amillion gasping tourists footsteps; thecurving street lined with coachinginns are reminders of harder timesgone bye, many with its own residentghost or grisley tale to be told. At thevery top, proudly stands the Churchof St Michael and All Angels; behindit lies one of the most atmosphericgraveyards you will ever visit, firstused over700 years ago, and claimedto house almost 40,000 souls, eachwith its own story. The graveyardslopes down from the top wall close tothe Georgian Parsonage, boarderedon one side by tall trees, often hometo a parliament of roosting rooks, which when disturbed circle noisilyabove. This village is famous forbooks, and some may say that thegraveyard is a little bit like a historybook, the only difference is that thepages here are made of stone. If you dare discover more about the darker sideof Haworth, join local guide Philip Lister on oneof his Halloween Week Lantern Light Graveyardtours. home workers who have concerns.Parents are struggling to downloademails as their children choke upthe bandwidth watching TV online, sharing photos and videos, playingcomputer games and, occasionally, doing their school and college work. For the Worth Valleyjoin us at www.fibrevalley.netOne of the many great things aboutthe Worth Valley is that it managesto be local, but still maintain nationalconnections; you can train to Londonfor nine o’clock and it’s pretty directto Leeds, Manchester and furtherafield. However, in a changing world, the connections that are becomingimportant aren’t roads, but fibres, thewires that bring broadband internetconnections to our communities, andthe Worth Valley isn’t nearly as wellconnected on that front. Recently,FibreValley, a group of residents witha personal or professional interest inhigh speed broadband was formed, and found real concerns amongresidents and business owners alike.David, for example, runs a businessin Bradford. He wants to be ableto have online meetings with theoffice, but his connection isn’t up toit. Similarly, Paul is a photographerwho wants to send high resolutionphotos to clients all over the world, but the upload speeds make thisnearly impossible. It isn’t justOver the past few months,FibreValley has been rallying supportfrom parish councils, politicians andcommunity leaders in the area andhave found a tremendous amountof support for their work. At FairIntents, volunteers conducted atwo day survey and found dozens ofresidents who weren’t satisfied withtheir broadband speed. To try and get a consistent picture, they’re now asking everyone in thevalley to take part in their speed testto help map out where the problemsare. Organiser Ken Eastwoodexplains: “All people have to do is goto our website http://fibrevalley.net/ and click on Speed Survey. Thepage has a simple button to work outyour broadband speed, which canthen be sent off to us. Eventually,we’ll have a map showing us wherethe inconsistencies are, and we’llwork with community groups and, ifpossible, telecoms companies to tryand address them.”Anyone wanting to do thespeedcheck or get involved inFibreValley can go to the website, orsearch for FibreValley on facebook. To advertise call us on 01535 64222710Say you saw it in the Worth Valley Mag!11

Haworth Couldn’t Wear Less!Men and Women of Worth bare all to help save important community buildingsu COMPUTER RELATED u2012 CalendarsIt all started when Jevgenia’s exerciseand dance class from Haworth went on anovernight excursion to the Dales. Whileenjoying the break in the countryside one ofthe dance class members, Sarah Granby, picked up the Grassington Calendar Boys2011 calendar. Following in the footstepsof the ladies of the Rylstone W.I., some ofthe men of Grassington had stripped off toraise money for a local cause. The idea aspioneered by the original Calendar Girls, hasbeen much copied with varying degrees ofsuccess. Though the Grassington offeringwas less than stellar compared to that ofthe ladies slightly further down the valley;the seed was sown in the mind of Sarah, who thought this might be a fun way toraise money for Haworth Parish Churchrestoration fund.It took a while, but wheels were set inmotion and local Worth Valley resident LizBarker and her husband, photographerPaul Barker were drafted in to assist. Itseemed highly appropriate to use Paul tohelp, because during his career as a pressTo advertise call us on 01535 64222714photographer, he covered the launch ofthe original W.I Calendar in 1999, and alsoappeared as an extra in the Calendar Girlsmovie. There have been so many terribleefforts at charity calendars, that thedecision was taken to only proceed onthe understanding that the project wouldbe done well or not at all. Despite thefact that it was to raise money for thechurch, boobs and bottoms would bevisible, and when this was reported in thelocal press, a few people from the parishchurch thought this was a most unsuitableproject for the church to be involved. (Notunlike the Calendar Girls’ story wherethe WI distanced itself from the calendarparticipants) After some smoothing andcajoling and explaining that this was nota particularly new or radical idea...andafterall it was the community coming tothe aid of the church, plans were madeand volunteers enlisted to pose in as greata state of undress as they dare. The goal was to include many peoplefrom different parts of the community, not just church goers or traders. The listgrew rapidly and so many people cameforward that it was eventually decided toproduce two calendars, one featuring menand the other featuring women. A littlefriendly rivalry has been introduced to seewhich version sells in greater quantities. The results will be announced at a partyin the New Year, which as well as havinganother occasion to raise a few morepounds for the church restoration fund, willbe an opportunity to draw the communitytogether for a common cause. The photographs are completed now,and the artwork is done. The calendarincludes a local councillor, a formerLord Mayor, a senior district councillor,a handful of Haworth traders, a host ofinteresting characters from the widerWorth Valley, a bellringer, a minister andhis wife, a plumber, a mechanic, a busker, and a retired Haworth bobby and oompahband leader many will certainly recognise. It is a cast of wonderfully brave and activecitizens willing to participate in communitylife; they deserve a pat on the back andmuch praise for their efforts. From mid October the calendar willbe available from many of the shopson Haworth Main Street and wider inthe community. You can order onlinevia www.worthvalleymag.co.uk. Pleasesupport this fundraising effort andpurchase the calendar for your friends andrelations. Thinking about SOLAR PV?Buyer Beware & Purchase with confidenceThere has been an astounding amountof growth in the solar photovoltaicmarket in the last quarter. Consumersare becoming increasingly aware andinterested in energy effieciency and newchoices open to them for powering theirhomes. The increased demand hashowever led to an increase in rogue tradersolar companies, as recently mentioned onTV; and some newcomers have jumped onthe bandwaggon thinking it will be an easyand profitable business opportunity. We recently learned that one reputablePV company from Queensbury had beenout to an installation for an 83 year oldgentleman in Wyke, Bradford, whereanother company had tried to charge£43,000.00 for a installation that wasworth £13,300.00!It may seem obvious but it is advisableto get more than one quote fromrecommended companies.Don’t assume that cheaper is better.Solar PV companies should be chargingaround the same unless they are usingsub standard materials or sub contractedlabour. Be sure you are quoted like forlike. and ask for clarification if you don’tunderstand the information or request anitemised quotation. Here is a Solar PV buyers’ checklistUse this to ensure the salesperson orsurveyor adequately checks the suitabilityof your home for solar PV.During a visit from a solar PV installationcompany, a good surveyor should do thefollowing.rMake written notes of all theTo advertise call us on 01535 64222716measurements, in particular theorientation of the roof.rLook at the roof – from both inside andoutside.rUse access equipment for closerinspection where roof quality is uncertain.rRecord any possible risk of shade on theroof from trees, neighbouring houses andchimneys.rExamine the loft and measure the tiltangle of the roof.rLook in detail at your consumer unit(fuse box) and metering.rIdentify your main electrical appliancesand when you use them.rLook around your house and discusswhere to locate cables and equipment.rProvide an in-depth quote includingscaffolding costs, panel/moduleinformation, details of warranties, detailsof the inverter, the company’s terms andconditions, and information on how it hascalculated the payback, rate of return andsavings.Remember to ask how long the companyhas been in the PV business. Alwaysask for references and follow them up. Areputable company will be delighted to putyou in touch with their customers. Youcan then find out just how good they areby speaking to others who have had thesystem installed.Find out, if the company is accredited witha recognised consumer advocate group ora professional association. As in all major purchases, buyer bewareis the axiom. Top Tech Tips by MIchelle Thompson of CloudFree ITThe Trouble with Email Aside fromthe irritation I feel since ‘txtspk’* startedreplacing the use of ‘Proper English’** insome forms of written communication, occasionally my blood pressure rises anotch further, when normally well-spokenrecipients of my ‘carefully crafted’ emailsreply with ‘attchmnt mssng - rsnd’. Call meold fashioned, but whatever happened topls?I know what you’re all thinking, folks!Quick slip of the mouse and ‘oopsy’ theemail has gone before you’ve attached thefile. I have a little sticky note next to mycomputer now warning ‘Don’t forget theattachment, Stupid!’.If I can see the file in question with theemail in my ‘sent items’, and can save it/open it locally on my computer, I know itwas sent. If my mail server doesn’t reportanything amiss, what did go wrong? If the recipient’s mailbox is nearly fullboth the email and attachment might getrejected. In some cases mail servers maystrip out suspicious attachments, but I canassure you I send only ‘pukka’ docs!If the intended recipient swears they’vebeen using the same mail system foryears and they only have trouble with yourattachments recently, it’s worth checkingnothing’s changed at your end.Try changing one variable at a timesuch as the email client or version of it,sending from a different computer orphysical location, in case one of these iscontributing to the problem. If you use Outlook you may find someemail client software can’t interpret thedefault Rich Text Format and mis-interpretthis as an attachment e.g. ‘winmail.dat’.Most software can’t open this. It stillTo advertise call us on 01535 64222722doesn’t explain where the ‘real attachment’went!I might try resending via Outlook WebAccess or ‘cc’ing the email’ to an emailaddress on Yahoo, GoogleMail or Hotmail. If that works the problem is definitely ontheir side. Some email clients are moretroublesome than others. Chances arewhatever your intended recipient is using, someone else somewhere has had thesame issue, so ‘Google it’ or talk to aprofessional.Sometimes this happens intermittentlyfor no apparent reason and when resent(without doing anything differently) theemail may just come through with theattachment intact. No time to troubleshoot? Upload thetricky file to a cloud-based file-sharingservice (e.g. Dropbox) and email a linkto your intended recipient so they candownload it from there.*Invented to keep text messages beloworiginal SMS limit of 160 characters.Evolved from concise communicationsused in the days of telegraph, when longermessages cost more to send. Months of planning cametogether for just two days inSeptember when the BronteParsonage meadow once againwas the location for HaworthFairtrade group’secofestival FairIntents. The weatherforecast wasn’tlooking great butfortunately luck waswith us and it stayedfine for the duration.Saturday evening was blessed with a fullmoon shining from a cloudless skyassisting the solar fairy lights intransforming the landscape intoa magical musical venue for theCeilidh, add to that the local andFairtrade wine and beer, and acurry and there was a heady mixof pleasures of which the Brontes, certainly Patrick, would haveapproved. The attendance over the two days wasdouble that of last year’s event, attractingover 3000, and there were far morethings to see and do. Some were ratherunplanned, like the straw bale seating thatbecame at first a den and soon a mountainof straw that kept dozens of childrenhappy for the whole two days. Visitors included KrisHopkins MP and Bradford’s LordMayor Naveeda Ikram who wereboth impressed by the eventand offered encouragement andpraise for such a community ledinitiative.Several charities benefited fromthe event and the huge cost ofstaging it was borne mainly from the Co-opMembership, EcologyBuilding Society, theParish Council andthe Big Lottery, aswell as a handful ofdedicated businessowners who gaveof their servicespro bono, and to whom we areextremely grateful. Thanks to all the brilliant peoplewho gave up their time and energyto help us put on two great days offun, games, music, playing, learning, eating, drinking, dancing, watching, joining in or just observing.fairtrade.org.ukfairintents.org.ukhaworthfairtrade.org.ukHEALTH uCounselling u Therapyu Holistic TreatmentsuHairdresserCounsellingVivien WallworkBSc., Psych, PG Dip Psychotherapy, MBACP.Help with;Stress • Anxiety • Anger • SadnessIndividuals • Couples & childrenwww.free-myself.com07775 616 696 • 01535 652815Relax and enjoy life more!Become more relaxed, be less anxious and lessstressed about life.
