<strong>Emergency</strong> <strong>Medical</strong> <strong>Services</strong>Associate of Applied Science inEMS Paramedic ProgramThe Institute of Public Safety at COTC offersan AAS degree in EMS that is composed ofthe EMT and Paramedic certificates as wellas selected general education classes. TheAAS is a two-year program and the bestchoice for students seeking a professionalcareer in EMS with the ability for promotionand advancement.Students who completed coursework prior tothe current academic year may be eligible toapply credit toward a <strong>Emergency</strong> <strong>Medical</strong>Service Associate Degree or the One-YearParamedic Certificate upon documentation ofcurrent license standards.<strong>Emergency</strong> <strong>Medical</strong> TechnicianCertificate — EMS 120The Institute for Public Safety at <strong>Central</strong> <strong>Ohio</strong><strong>Technical</strong> <strong>College</strong> offers EMT at all COTCcampuses. EMS 120 is a 7-credit hour/onesemester course. Students completing thecourse will be eligible to apply to take TheNational Registry of <strong>Emergency</strong> <strong>Medical</strong>Technician exam.Admission requirements: COTC application for admission and$20 application fee. Submit official high school transcriptwith date of graduation and GPA(cumulative grade point average)indicated. If not a high school graduate,copy of GED certificate. Must be 18 years old, or 17 and a highschool senior or graduate. Completion of FBI background checkwithin past 6 months. Passage of drug screening. Must have a valid <strong>Ohio</strong> driver’s license. Health physical/immunizations on filewith EMS program. EMT students must have earned a “C”grade (2.0) or better in GENR-096,GENR-094, and MATH-060 (orappropriate score on COMPASS mathtest).CPR certification recommended.EMT includes a minimum of 150 hours --classroom and lab as scheduled plus aminimum of 15 clinical hours to be arrangedat both hospital and EMS agencies which willrequire the student to have adequatetransportation to off-campus sites in central<strong>Ohio</strong>.Advanced <strong>Emergency</strong> <strong>Medical</strong>Technician Certificate — EMS 150For continuing education in this field, theInstitute for Public Safety at COTC offersAdvanced EMT training. EMS 150 is an 8-credit hour/one semester course. Applicantsmust be <strong>Ohio</strong> Certified EMT. Studentscompleting the courses will be eligible to takeThe National Registry of <strong>Emergency</strong> <strong>Medical</strong>Technician Advanced exam.Admission requirements: COTC application for admission and$20 application fee (or reactive if aformer student). Aftercompleting the certificate, the student will beeligible to apply to take The National Registryof <strong>Emergency</strong> <strong>Medical</strong> TechniciansParamedic exam. Classes are offered onCOTC’s Knox and Pataskala campuses.Admission requirements:Spaces available in the Paramedic programsare limited and selections are made on acompetitive basis. Minimum requirements forconsideration include: COTC application for admission and$20 application fee (or reactive if aformer student). Submit official high school transcriptwith date of graduation and GPA(cumulative grade point average)indicated. If not a high school graduate,copy of GED certificate. Submit official college transcripts fromall colleges previously attended withGPA (cumulative grade point average)indicated. Health physical/immunizations on filewith EMS program. Submit documentation of Bureau ofCriminal Identification (FBI) backgroundcheck with prior 6 months of EMSapplication deadline. Complete, sign and send by certifiedmail the Paramedic Application formpostmarked no later than the deadlinedate listed on the application. All aboverequirements must be completed beforemailing the Paramedic Application.Paramedic is a 12-month (three semesters)program which includes a minimum of 500hours -- classroom and lab as scheduled andminimum of 200 hospital and 300 medic unithours to be arranged at both hospital andEMS agencies which will require the studentto have adequate transportation to off-campussites in central <strong>Ohio</strong>. The paramedic programis a very intense college-level academicprogram which will require significant timeequivalent to a full-time job.Learning Outcomes for ParamedicCertificateUpon completion of the <strong>Emergency</strong> <strong>Medical</strong><strong>Services</strong> Paramedic plan of study, thestudent will be able to: Perform patient assessment andmanagement of the patient. Perform patient assessment andmanagement of the trauma patient. Provide patient care for gynecologicaland obstetrical emergencies, includingneonatal. Provide patient care for cardiacemergencies; including applying 12-leadECG’s, reading ECG strips andperforming advanced cardiac lifesupport. Understand the process of humandevelopment and recognize the uniqueneeds of both the geriatric and pediatricpatient. Demonstrate appropriate personalsafety and provide care for patients withcommunicable diseases. Demonstrate appropriate skills, i.e.initiating intravenous procedures,intraosseous procedures,chricothyrotomy, etc. Meet requirements established fornational registration and statecertification.Profession/Statement of PurposeThe purpose of the <strong>Emergency</strong> <strong>Medical</strong><strong>Services</strong> programs is to prepare qualifiedemergency medical service personnel at thelevels of <strong>Emergency</strong> <strong>Medical</strong> Responder,EMT, EMT Advanced and the Paramedic.These professionals will practice ethically,respond to patient needs with competenceand compassion and help fulfill thecommunity’s health care needs.OpportunitiesThose who complete the coursework andpass the National Registry exam for theirparticular level of preparation are eligible foremployment in hospitals, ambulanceservices and fire departments.Important Student Characteristics Effective communication skills Critical and creative thinking Attention to detail Physical and emotional stamina Interpersonal skillsProgram ExpensesCOTC EMS uniforms are required for EMSclasses and consist of a COTC uniform shirt,navy blue pants, dark shoes/socks/belt, wristwatch and stethoscope. Books will berequired each semester and are available forpurchase through the COTC bookstore.In addition to the course tuition, effectiveautumn 2012, EMS students will need topurchase FISDAP assessment tools at thebeginning of the term.
