ACTION NOW!A political resource guide for<strong>IA</strong><strong>TSE</strong> <strong>Local</strong>s and members toget out the vote in <strong>2012</strong>By David GeffnerIf you think for one minute your union vote won’t make a differencein the upcoming <strong>No</strong>vember election cycle, which includesthe contest to determine the 45th President of the United States,consider what happened four years ago in Ohio, a state that hasonly failed to pick the nation’s President once in the last 70 years.“President Obama won this state by about one-and-a-half percentage points,” explains Tim Burga,a third generation steelworker and President of the Ohio AFL-CIO. “<strong>The</strong>re are more than 700,000 activeunion members in Ohio. Factor in their families and retirees, and the many local and affiliatedunions in Working America, and you have a voter base of more than <strong>1.</strong>5 million people. That was 25percent of all Ohio voters in ’08. Do the math and you can see how important it is to educate and mobilizeunion members this coming <strong>No</strong>vember.”Do the math indeed. In the wake of the most aggressive assault on the rights of working familiesin this nation in 2010 and 2011, this year’s upcoming election cycle will prove as crucial as any inrecent memory. <strong>No</strong>t only is this the case in the Presidential race, but in numerous state and localballot and referendum measures across the nation.What can <strong>IA</strong><strong>TSE</strong> members and locals do to ensure labor’s interests are served at the ballot boxin <strong>2012</strong>? Plenty.
