This is true aweand terror.Al-Haj Muhammad Umar replied:“The pledge that we gave to the Ameer of the Mujaahideen (UstaadSayyaaf) is that we shall not lay down our arms until an Islamic State isestablished. There will be no meetings or negotiations before itsestablishment.”Two days after receiving his reply, the Russians attacked with theirsquadrons of planes and troops, and a battle ensued between them and theMujaahideen. The outcome was the destruction of 40 tanks, three jetswere downed and 500 communists killed. In contrast, only 20Mujaahideen fell...They are lacking in every worldly means, and everything is against them,except that they possess something that is more valuable than everythingis, and that is: Imaan in Allaah, being pleased with the Divine decree andpatience in calamity and adversity...Some brothers asked me: “Is the Afghan Jihaad in need of men?”My reply was similar to Ustaad Sayyaafs: “The Jihaad is in need of money,and men are in need of Jihaad.”He, the Almighty, Who has created human nature, has made it such that itis more effected and moved by realities and actions than words andspeeches. An environment wherein one sacrifices and suppresses theimpositions of personal pride is the most virtuous environment in whichthe soul may reside. In it the carnal self is nurtured, the soul refined andelevated. It is for this reason that seeing a living example is more beneficialthen spending many years buried in books.66
