Look atsandwich course optionsbefore you apply.Am I confident about thequality of the course?Look on the internet atwww.unistats.com –this website helps you tocompare subjects atuniversities and colleges.It includes information on:•entry requirements•the National StudentSurvey results•study and assessment.Have I checked thecourse details?Courses with the same title canbe very different – make surethat you choose what’s rightfor you.Do I need to have anyspecific work experience?This will probably be vitalfor health, teaching orcare courses.Do I meet theentry requirements?Details of course requirementsare listed on the UCAS website(look at ‘Entry Profiles’ on‘Course Search’) andin university prospectuses.What is the UCAS Tariff?The Tariff gives numerical valuesto qualifications and allows youto compare different types ofqualifications. Some institutionsuse the Tariff when settingentry levels and conditionaloffers for admission to theircourses. Some courses ask fora mixture of grades and points,for example 280 points from 3A levels including subject X atgrade B.Some courses will allow youto include points for Key Skills,others will not.Visit www.ucas.com forfurther details.Be confident you can meetthe grades.RememberIf you’re applying for art anddesign courses, you’ll needto prepare a portfolio ofyour work.If you’re interested inperforming arts courses, youmay need to prepare forauditions.8
Can I studyoverseas?Increasing numbers of students arechoosing to study abroadThere are three main waysyou can do this:• by taking a language courseor specialist course in asubject such as EuropeanStudies, European Law orInternational Business whichincludes spending part ofyour course abroad• through the Erasmusprogramme. This offersstudents taking a wide rangeof subjects the opportunityto study for part of theirdegree in the EU• studying the whole of yourdegree abroad. Universitiesacross Europe are reportinghigher numbers of UKstudents joining programmestaught and examined inEnglish.Reasons to goSo you can:• enjoy the culture ofanother country• learn or improve yourlanguage skills• improve your careeropportunities• develop your confidenceand independence• enhance your CV and profileespecially when applying tofirms doing business abroador multi-national companies.In addition, students choosingto study their whole courseabroad may be able to accesspopular and over-subscribedcourses such as medicine,dentistry, veterinary medicineand physiotherapy.Points to consider• The quality of the institutionand course – you can checkthis out for institutionsacross the world atwww.topuniversities.com• Recognition of qualifications– do check that the courseis recognised by relevantprofessional bodies in the UK.• Costs – details of tuitionfees and living costs are inthe ‘International’ section ofuniversity websites. In theEU, you will only be asked topay tuition fees at the samelevel as the home students.In some EU countries, tuitionfees are much lower than inEngland or free but in othercountries outside the EU youmay find much higher costs.You will have additionalcosts for travel and healthinsurance and exchange ratefluctuations to factor in.For further information abouthelp with the cost of studyoverseas, go towww.gov.uk/studentfinance• Can you cope withliving abroad?• Do you need a visa?Embassies will adviseon these.• You will need to researchthe entrance and languagerequirements, applicationsystems and procedures.You need to start planning12-15 months before you go.Erasmus• This programme currentlyenables students in 32countries to study for partof their degree at 4,000institutions across Europe.• You can spend from threemonths to a full yearstudying in another country.Some courses require a goodworking knowledge of thelanguage but others offerlanguage skills tuition orcourses taught in English.• You should investigate now,whether universities you areconsidering offer Erasmusopportunities for the courseyou want to do.
