Foundationcourses offer an opportunityto try out different techniques<strong>and</strong> methods before decidingwhat to do at university. Youapply directly to the collegefor these courses.The applicationprocessLike st<strong>and</strong>ard applicationsfor HE courses:• most art <strong>and</strong> design coursesrecruit through UCAS• courses are easily identifiedon www.ucas.com• you can apply for up tofive courses• fees are the same as forother applications to UCAS£<strong>12</strong> for one course <strong>and</strong>£23 for two or more, orapplications received afterJune 30th• applications are acceptedfrom 1 September.But• there are two applicationdeadline dates for art<strong>and</strong> design courses, either15th January or 24thMarch. Applicationsare accepted from 1stSeptember regardlessof the closing date.What will happen?• Institutions will decideon the deadline for eachcourse that they offer; thismeans an institution canhave some courses using theJanuary deadline <strong>and</strong> otherswith a March deadline.• You can apply for fivecourses with a deadlineof January 15 or five witha deadline of 24 March,or a mix.• Once your application hasbeen received UCAS willcontact you through Trackwith details of interviews<strong>and</strong> portfolio inspection.• Institutions have to giveequal consideration toall applications received ontime- that is the deadlinedate. You do not have toput any of your choices inorder of preference.• Institutions will not knowwhich other courses youare applying for.• You decide which coursesto accept after you havereceived replies from allyour courses. As otherUCAS applicants you canaccept a maximum of twoconditional offers or oneunconditional offer.• No offers. Apply throughUCAS Extra for courseswith vacancies, see page 11.Portfolios <strong>and</strong>InterviewsThese are very important stagesof the selection process.• Art <strong>and</strong> design is verypopular - competitionfor places is fierce.Your portfolioneeds theWOW factor!• Plan <strong>and</strong> prepare yourportfolio carefully - courseentry criteria will help youwith this.• Tutors want to see a wellpresented, well-editedcollection of 10-<strong>12</strong> piecesof work.• You need to show evidenceof a variety of media. Youare advised to include sketchbooks <strong>and</strong> examples of ideadevelopment, some writtenwork, personally mediatedwork <strong>and</strong> ability.• Practise presenting yourportfolio (discussing yourwork using appropriatelanguage) – but rememberyou may only have20 minutes.• Make sure you can showawareness of contemporarywork, enthusiasm <strong>and</strong>willingness to learn.Show them you want thiscourse, at this university!It is advisable to apply early<strong>and</strong> avoid a last minute rush.<strong>12</strong>
CUKASApplying to musicconservatoireswww.cukas.ac.ukCUKAS is an online applicationservice for practice-based music,dance <strong>and</strong> drama courses at eightUK conservatoires: BirminghamConservatoire, Leeds College ofMusic, Royal College of Music,Royal Academy of Music, RoyalNorthern College of Music, RoyalConservatoire of Scotl<strong>and</strong>, RoyalWelsh College of Music <strong>and</strong> Drama<strong>and</strong> Trinity Laban Conservatoire ofMusic <strong>and</strong> Danceyou can apply for up to six coursesit costs £16 to apply to CUKAS.You also have to pay audition fees.Most institutions ask for these atthe time of application, otherwiseyou pay them once you have beeninvited to an auditionthe application process is verysimilar to UCAS but differentdeadlines applyMid June onwards applicationsare accepted1st October closing date foron-time applications to music.Print off <strong>and</strong> save a copy ofyour applicationit may be possible to make lateapplications after this date butcheck with the institution that theywill accept one after 1st Februaryafter sending in your application youcan check progress using CUKASTrack. In 2014, UCASClearing procedures may change.RESULTSDAYIf you areunplaced, askfor help from youradviser or tutor• if you are eligible, UCAS willuse Track to tell you how touse Clearing <strong>and</strong> yourClearing number• check the vacancy lists on theUCAS or individual institutions’websites - some newspapersalso publish vacancies•at this stage, you can applyfor any course that has places,you don’t have to keep to thesame subjects as your originalapplication• if you find a suitable courseyou will have to ring theadmissions tutor•before you phone haveyour UCAS form <strong>and</strong> A levelresults to h<strong>and</strong>• check through the course details<strong>and</strong> be ready to explain whyyou think this course may besuitable for you. You may havea mini interview on the phone.If possible visit the institutionbefore making a decision•if they offer you a place thinkvery carefully before saying yes– do not accept it until youare sure this course <strong>and</strong> thisinstitution are right for you• when you find a course youlike <strong>and</strong> that has offered youa place you should enteryour details on Track.
