Come and enjoy the day and enjoy productsfrom local manufacturers.Thank you to all that have taken part in the 2 workbees in May. First the annual work bee was attended byover 120 people – the grounds are looking great. Thanks to the ladies (Becky and Julie) that cleaned thebar grille – a dirty job that would make Mike Rowecringe—well done. This ishow the raffle works- it is based on the Michigan LotteryDaily 3 Evening number. The ticket costs $10.00 andyour number is good for the entire month. We pay$300.00 to the winning number on Mondays and $100.00on all of the other days. We also pay $25.00 if yournumber is one over, or one under the daily winner.Basically, you have three chances a day, seven days aweek for the entire month. If the winning ticket has notbeen sold, we use the Michigan Daily 3 Mid-Day numberto determine the winner. Up until a few years ago, wehave been able to sell all 1000 tickets each month. However, we now have a number of unsold tickets. When you advertise three prizes a day, you must paythree prizes a day, so our expenses are not changed. Thelost income comes entirely from the profits. If you sell 10tickets, we will give you two hours time on your card. Also, if you sell the daily winning number, you receive acheck for 10%. Stop by and see me meeting night, I’mout helping with the popcorn or call me if you have anyquestions. If you don’t think you could sell any tickets, why notbuy one. Where else can you get three chances a day, seven days a week, for entire month for $10.00. You canbuy a ticket at the bar, or see me meeting night.~ Jim Kirn Daily Raffle Chairman

~ Letters to the Editor ~Thank YouBy the time you read this, Range House #2 should be finished on the inside. Painting, lights, curtain, and newFormica in the service area. The orange is gone!!! I would like to thank Ken Behrens, Margret Worden,Marshall Maybrier and Dan Peltier. Thanks to all of you. From the Horticulture committee;Warming weather has kind of showed up a little here and there and the fruits of our labor have begun toshow. Hopefully everyone has enjoyed the bulbs and early perennials that have showed off various areas aroundthe grounds. What should be mentioned, those projects and many others occur because of the generosity frommembers and I believe others that take pride in the appearance of the club that we invite many people into.I would like to thank a few specific groups on work that has been done or in progress. Ron Pennell (Moose)donated landscape timbers that we used to do the large area just west of the Monument with some leftover foruse down at the lake and elsewhere. It was his wish to honor this to his father Les who was one the very 1 st ofthe Multi-Lakers in 1942. Thanks Moose. Thanks also to Pete and Bob Zavitz for getting that work done. (Andany others that helped).Boy Scout Troop # 170. Twenty or Thirty years ago I'm told the Scouts came out and did the Flagpole areaand this year at the annual work bee MLCA member Sean Walker along with other adults and 9 Scouts helpedtear out the old wood framing ,grade, level, and set base to lay down new donated decorative concrete blocks. This was a major project with a lot of heavy lifting and attention to detail to make sure this will hold up for a verylong time. Thanks to all the volunteers, Pete and Dave Elam for coordinating this project. Thanks also to Garyand Jason Biacco for the block and delivery as well.We have again chosen to make our plant purchases at Bogie Lake Greenhouse. Mark gave us the same flatprice as last year and his staff has been great help to us for years. See the ad in the Multi-Laker and please visitthis expansive greenhouse right across the road from Lakeland High School. In closing, thanks to all that showed up at the annual work bee. The weather could have been better, but wehad a few new people helping close by that got a bunch of work done. As always, sincere thanks to all that helpwith monetary donations, elbow grease, and encouragement that keeps us motivated. If I did not mentionPhyllis and Kathy there is a chance a lightning strike could take me. Thanks ladies. Also Lynn- something worsecould happen. Thanks also to Kitty and Lucy. At this time we have not done our voluntary collection at theMay General Membership Meeting for donations to the Horticulture/ Beautification Fund but I will in advancethank all of you that contributed, as this is a major source of funding that is well received and allows us to dowhat we do with virtually no club money. Thanks as always.Robert Bauman and Pete Rinehart (who may not approve of this letter - to windy he may say. I say too badPete - Guilty by association.)Letters to the Editor, and Hunt Photos should be e-mailed to D_Leonard@multilakes.comPrints and hand written letters can be dropped in my box at the club.Red Cross Blood DriveSunday, June 12 thOpen to the Public16 Years & Older19

June: Late Spring and Summer Workby Marty ZarembaThe heavy spring work is over. The annual and vegetable gardens have already been planted, but additionalplantings of some kinds, such as beans and beets can be made. There should be time to trim the edges of thebeds, stake and tie tall plants that need support against the wind, and still have time for other chores. Mostannuals and other bedding plants should be set out the second week of June. Plant sweet corn, cucumbers andpumpkins for Halloween.Tulip bulbs will be ready to dig up by the end of June. June is hot. This encourages the formation of manylateral bulbs rather than large central ones. Now that the weather is warm and somewhat settled, thehouseplants can be taken outside to the decks. Put them in the sun or shade according to their needs. Fertilizeregularly or repot when needed. If it has been cool and overcast, the hot sun will wilt many plants. The wilting does not necessarily mean alack of water, it means the water is leaving the plants faster than it is being replaced. Soft leaves lose water toofast. When they harden up, check the soil moisture. If moist, do not water, you could cause a mildew problem.Try to keep the weeds out of the garden. In rain or heavy watering, weeds will appear as by some kind ofmagic. If you start to notice holes in leaves, try to determine what is causing the damage. Seven will stopearwigs and most other insects. Insecticidal soap will control mites and aphids. The lawn may start to look bad, but it is not a cause for concern. Our cool season grasses like moderatetemperatures and it is now hot. Don’t worry; the lawn will soon green up again.Shrubs and hedges have made most of their growth by June. The third week of June would be a good time toprune or shear them. By the end of June they will have grown enough to hide the holes made by pruning. Most shrubs that bloom before the end of June could have some branches removed after they have finishedblooming. This type of pruning provides spaces for light and air to enter the plant. It also encourages newgrowth and flowers for next year.June is a good time to propagate with softwood cuttings. Try azalea, bayberry, boxwood, forsythia, hydrangea, lilac, spiraea and viburnum. Air layering is my favorite way to propagate new plants. Make a slit inthe stem at a point where it is desired that roots should form. Hold the slit open with a toothpick or spentmatch. Insert the toothpick in the slit, wrap the wound with a handful of sphagnum moss and cover it withwaxed paper or poly material. Leave the top open so that water can be added to keep the moss moist. In two orthree months the moss will be filled with roots and ready to be cut off the parent plant and planted. It’s alwaysa good way to get the difficult to find white flowering plants.Trees can be planted in June, but be careful to checkthe soil moisture. Don’t let the roots dry out.In June, most folks spend more time outdoors. Moretime sitting under shade trees. Now they notice thatleaves have holes. They notice that some have red orbrown spots, and the ground is littered with what lookslike good leaves. Holes in leaves can be okay. Red spotsare probably insect eggs and are not a problem in lownumbers. Brown spots are probably caused by ananthracnose fungus and have already done their damage.See you when the wind shifts!~ Marty ZarembaDeath NoticeOur sincere sympathy goes out to:The Benson family, with the April 26 th passing of Russell Benson, brother of member Ray Benson. The Potter family, with the May 12 th passing of Don Potter, brother of member Tony Potter.20God Bless and may they rest in peace.
