EDUCATIONDegree : Chemistry, University of Lisbon, 1982.Master : "Chemistry of the catalytic processes", IST, TU Lisbon, l989. Supervisor Prof. Dr. Armando J.L.Pombeiro.PhD: Chemical Engeneering, IST, TU Lisbon, 1993. Supervisor Prof. Dr. Armando J.L. Pombeiro.3. SCIENTIFIC CARRERAfter graduation the research began, free of charge, in the Electroplating field, at the Center forElectrochemistry and Kinetics, University of Lisbon, under the guidance of Prof. Isabel Pereira. In 1986she was admitted to the Master in Chemistry of Catalytic Processes (IST) and in 1987 she was awarded aMaster's scholarship by INIC. At this stage, the work was carried out under the supervision of Prof. Dr.Armando Pombeiro at the Centro de Química Estrutural (IST). Having completed the Master shecontinued her studies in the same place and with the same supervisor, under a PhD fellowship [initiallygranted by INIC, later transferred to the JNICT (CIENCIA Program) ], jointly in Line I (BioinorganicChemistry under the responsibility of Prof. Fraústo Dr. da Silva) and in Line V (Coordination Chemistryand Molecular Electrochemistry, under the responsibility of Prof. Armando Pombeiro)].During the PhD:i) She prepared the first rhenium(I) complexes containing chelating diphosphines in cis position andsynthesized a series of mono-and di-nitrile compounds with that metal center, as well as, by protonationreactions, some derived metheleneamide species.ii) She devoted to the analysis of complex spectra of nuclear magnetic resonance by using the iterativespin simulation program LAOCOON.iii) In collaboration with Prof. Christian Amatore, École Normale Superieure, in Paris, she developednon-conventional electrochemical techniques, particularly fast cyclic voltammetry and cyclicvoltammetry in steady-state conditions, and she built a potentiostat and her own ultramicroelectrodes ofgold and platinum (diameters up to 5 m).iv) She began the study of mechanisms of fast reactions by techniques of digital simulation in cyclicvoltammetry and stopped flow spectrophotometry, in collaboration with Profs. Christian Amatore andRichard A. Henderson (Univ. of Sussex), respectively. In parallel to the research work leading to the PhD degree, but regardless of this, and given the interest instudying the electrochemical behaviour of complexes with biological significance:v) Collaborated with the group of Prof. Fraústo da Silva in the investigation of the electrochemicalbehaviour of complexes of vanadium (IV), models of Amavadine.
