nrUNIVERkLTJSWOLUMB1English Rugby ClubHE season 193 1-32 has been an extremely eventful one for the-- English Rugby Club, Last September the Club once more gotunder way with the most enthusiastic turn-outs ever recorded. With eleven of last year’s McKechnie Cup team back andnearly all of “Mcllmoyle’s Mudlarks,” it was decided to put twoteams in the Miller Cup League. This was done, the first ratingbacks playing for “U.B.C.” and the forwards for “Varsity.” Eachteam played good football but the division of strength told as the“Varsity” team won only two games and tied one, while “U.B.C.”won one and tied one. It gave more players exceptionally goodexperience in the senior .division, however, and helped to build upan exceptionally strong McKechnie Cup team. The strength ofthe present Miller Cup team was easily shown when they playedthe “Occasionals,” the Varsity Graduate team, and beat them decisively last Thanksgiving in an exhibition match, and in a leaguematch two days after Christmas trounced the Ex-King George team, then the league leaders, 17-3.From this union of two teams the McKechnie Cup squad wasformed. Up to date Varsity has played only two McKechnie Cupgames and prospects have never seemed brighter for regaining thecup. On November 12, Varsity played its old rivals, the Vancouver Rep. Keen interest was aroused for this game and a recordnumber of students attended it. To arouse even greater supporta pep-meeting and a miniature “Rugbyssey” heralded the game. The play was keenly contested throughout but Varsity went downto a glorious defeat in the second half.On January 9 the team travelled to Victoria to meet theVictoria Rep., and by their brilliant showing convinced all whosupport the game that Varsity has a team of which it may justlybe proud. The game, played before a huge crowd, and put on the air forits Vancouver supporters, was one of the most thrilling witnessedin years. At half time the score was 6-6. Early in the second half,Victoria scored and converted, making it 11-6. It was here thatthe team’s fighting spirit came to the fore. With Howie Clevelandoff the field with minor concussion suffered in the game, and playingone man short, Varsity drove time and again at Victoria’s line andfinally, in the last few minutes of the game, scored twice. It washere that Phil Barratt, playing his last McK.echnie Cup match, madehistory, for it was this red-haired flash that made both the winningtries—Score 12-11 for Varsity! With such a team, the prospects for winning the McKechnieCup trophy, emblematic of rugby supremacy in B. C., look bright,to say the least.(C rn, r r ,,ucrl on /‘nrrc 0,,r !lcr,,cirerl n,,d Tirirt u dgI,t[1371
