2012 Year in Review - The Scott Arboretum of Swarthmore College

PROGRAMSHere’s an alphabetical parade of the programswe offered in 2012 and a synopsis of the results.ARBOR DAY CELEBRATION: On April 26 we celebrated Arbor Day with over 500 elementarystudents at the Swarthmore Rutledge School, providing red oak seedlings free to all.ARBORETUM ASSISTANTS: A new class of 17 volunteers was trained in the winter of 2012,joining volunteers from previous years’ classes to assist the Arboretum staff in all its activities.In 2012 a total of 9,871 volunteer hours were recorded by volunteers. Using the IndependentSector estimated value of $22.14/hour, this represented a contribution of manpower worth$218,544. On August 15, 84 of our Arboretum Assistants attended the annually held VolunteerThank You. This year the event was a luncheon held in Clothier Hall with a thank you giftof embossed shirts for volunteers.ARBORETUM ASSISTANT UPDATES: In 2012 continuing educational sessions for volunteersincluded, “Cherries for the Home Garden” (April 12); “Water Quality and Watersheds”(July 18); and “Choosing Hardy Camillias for Spring and Fall” (Oct. 15).ASSOCIATES OF THE SCOTT ARBORETUM: Established in 1971, the membership programmarked its 41st anniversary in 2012. At year end there were 1,114 active memberships.At the close of fiscal year 2011-2012, June 30, dues provided $83,276 of support to theorganization.AT HOME SERIES: This travel program concentrates on home properties typically relying onparticipants to provide their own transportation. In 2012 these included: the private garden ofJenny Rose Carey on June 15; the private garden of Liz and Ralph Schumacher on September21; 48 participated.CELL PHONE TOURS: In 2012 we had 45 items offered on smart phone applications ormobile phone audio tours. We had 297 uses representing 80 individuals.COMMUNITY GARDENS: Twenty-three garden plots (10’ x 12’) were utilized by 15 ScottAssociates for vegetable and fruit growing along Harvard Avenue in 2012.CRUM CREEK CLEAN-UP: The whole communitywas invited to join the Arboretum staffto provide care for the Crum Woods, with aclean-up event staged on May 1. With boots,canoes, and bags, trash was removed fromthe stream and banks of the College-ownedsection of the Crum.DAY TRIPS: Local opportunities to learnthrough travel by bus or vans included theseadventures:January 25 – The private greenhouses of Mrs.Hamilton; May 22 – Gardens in Chestertown,Maryland; June 28 – Charming ChesterCounty; September 13 – Grounds for Sculpture and Princeton University;October 3 – U. S. Botanic Garden, Kreeger Museum, and Hillwood; October 10 – Nemours.A total of 128 Scott Associates participated; an average of 21 per trip.Staff andvolunteersenjoyingpizza inthe holliesfollowingthe CrumWoodsClean-upon May 1.3
