<strong>Candidate</strong> <strong>Campaigning</strong> <strong>Guidelines</strong>:ELECTION OF THE 2014 <strong>US</strong>GBC BOARD OF DIRECTORSThe following <strong>Campaigning</strong> <strong>Guidelines</strong> apply to all candidates for elected positions on the 2014<strong>US</strong>GBC Board of Directors. <strong>Candidate</strong>s who do not follow these guidelines may be in violationof <strong>US</strong>GBC's Membership Policies & Procedures relating to the use of the <strong>US</strong>GBC member listsand those relating to membership revocation. Examples are provided after each guideline toillustrate acceptable and unacceptable conduct. By offering guidelines, <strong>US</strong>GBC expectscandidates to conduct themselves in a manner consistent with the guidelines’ spirit and intent.Questions regarding these guidelines should be directed to <strong>US</strong>GBC Director of GovernanceJennifer Druliner at jdruliner@usgbc.org.A candidate should:Be truthful and accurate regarding his or her credentials and professional and volunteerexperience, focusing only on him or herself.Acceptable: speaking to a <strong>US</strong>GBC member about one’s own qualifications.Unacceptable: mischaracterizing any opponents' positions or credentials.Conduct him or herself in a professional, courteous, and respectful manner.Acceptable: asking a <strong>US</strong>GBC Chapter to speak at a scheduled event about his or hercandidacy.Unacceptable: using access to a <strong>US</strong>GBC Chapter member database to send unsolicitedinformation about his or her candidacy.Keep in mind that under the Board’s Code of Conduct, a Board member is expected tomake decisions on the basis of all of the information presented to them. Consequently,“campaign promises” on specific matters may result in a perceived conflict of interest or aviolation of the Board's Code of Conduct.Acceptable: describing how a candidate’s professional and personal experience hasprepared him or her for meaningful service on the <strong>US</strong>GBC Board.Unacceptable: pledging specific changes to the work or direction of <strong>US</strong>GBC.Keep <strong>US</strong>GBC staff apprised of any anticipated or actual change in employment status.Acceptable: informing <strong>US</strong>GBC staff of a pending job change during the self-nomination orelection periods.Unacceptable: not informing <strong>US</strong>GBC staff of a pending job change during the selfnominationor election periods.A candidate may:Answer questions and respond to direct inquiries received.


Promote candidacy via e-mail “blast” to his or her established contacts, and/or have his orher employer promote the candidacy via email to established contacts, for up to a combinedmaximum total of two such email “blasts.”Promote candidacy via his or her established social networks (such as Facebook, Twitter, orLinkedIn) and either a personal or employer’s website at the candidate’s own or employer’sexpense.Seek endorsements from <strong>US</strong>GBC Chapters and member organizations and list any suchendorsements on his or her personal website, a Chapter’s or a member organization’swebsite.Utilize any or all of the following opportunities to disseminate his or her message to the<strong>US</strong>GBC membership.oThe photograph, biography, employer’s or otherwise designated website, and statementof qualifications for each candidate will be posted on the <strong>US</strong>GBC website prior to and forthe duration of the election provided that these materials are sent to <strong>US</strong>GBC inaccordance with posted deadlines. <strong>Candidate</strong>s’ answers to issue-focused questions mayalso be posted.oSubmit a short, up to 3 minute, video to be linked from the <strong>US</strong>GBC website. Forconsistency and to ensure a level playing field, candidates’ videos are to berecorded in front of neutral or natural background (nothing promotional orinformational)as a continuous, non-edited recording. Videos are not to beprofessionally produced or edited, nor are text or logos of any kind permitted onthese videos. <strong>Candidate</strong>s may talk only about themselves and not about anyother candidate(s). Videos longer than 3 minutes in length will be rejected.<strong>Candidate</strong>s must post their videos to a public website, such as YouTube or Vimeo, andsubmit the link to NWG members and/or <strong>US</strong>GBC staff, as instructed, by the posteddeadline for review. If it is determined that the video meets the criteria, staff will post thelink on the <strong>US</strong>GBC website where candidate information is posted. If the video isdeemed to violate the prescribed parameters above, the video will be rejected and thecandidate will be informed of the reason(s) for the rejection, with an opportunity toresubmit.The following questions are provided as guidance for video content only; candidates arenot required to respond to these questions:Why do you wish to serve on the <strong>US</strong>GBC Board?What do you want to share about your leadership experience?What is your vision for <strong>US</strong>GBC?These campaigning guidelines supersede all prior guidelines and rules specifically relatingto campaigning for the <strong>US</strong>GBC Board of Directors.Approved by the <strong>US</strong>GBC Board of Directors on 25 April 2013
