compelled to encourage the saintsthere because of the great persecutionthey were experiencing. It is so important that we encourageone another. Someone once said,“Encouragement is like oxygen to thesoul.” Without oxygen we can’t breathe, and if we can’t breathe, we cease to live.Think about what your body would belike without oxygen. Now think aboutwhat your life would be like if no oneever encouraged you.Nothing will lift someone higherthan a few words of encouragement: “Ijust want to let you know that I’m herefor you. You can make it.” These simplewords can mean so much.Discouragement is not somethingyou can prevent with an inoculation. In other words, no one is immune tothe damaging effectsof discouragement. Infact, discouragementis one of the main toolsthe enemy uses to getpeople out of churchand out of the will ofGod. Many times aperson needs only alittle encouragementto get back on track.Everyone needsencouragement. Itdoesn’t matter howhigh or low you are onthe totem pole, so tospeak, it’s always niceto hear kind words ofencouragement. Evenin my own life, therehave been times when I have preachedwith a heavy heart on the inside. Butin times like that, someone inevitablycomes up to me and says, “Pastor, we’rewith you.” Encouraging words alwayslift me up.Have you ever been at the pointwhere you were ready to throw in thetowel? You were ready to quit, butsomeone came along, patted you onthe back, and said, “It’s going to be allright. We’re with you.” Those simplewords gave you the strength to continue.Instead of quitting, you kept atit and finished your course.Encouragement can come in variousways and from various people. We caneven encourage ourselves. In FirstSamuel 30:6, King David was greatlydistressed, and he encouraged himselfin the Lord.Encouragement also comes throughthe Word of God.6 rhema.orgRefuse to be part of thewrecking crew;instead, be a part of thebuilding crew.ROMANS 15:4 (NIV)4 For everything that was writtenin the past was written to teach us,so that through endurance and theencouragement of the Scriptureswe might have hope.We can become so busy in our everydayaffairs that we neglect reading ourBible. But it is from God’s Word thatwe draw our greatest strength andencouragement.Encouragement also comes byloving one another. Philemon 1:7 says,“Your love has given me great joy andencouragement, because you, brother, have refreshed the hearts of the saints”(NIV).Paul was encouraged when he sawPhilemon encouraging others. Encouragementis twofold. We need to encourageothers as much as we need to beencouraged.Third: We Build the ChurchThrough EdificationFirst, the Church will be builtthrough evangelism. Second, theChurch of the Lord Jesus Christ willbe built through encouragement. Third, the Church of the Lord Jesus Christwill be built through edification. To “edify” means to build up. Unfortunately, too many people specializein demolition. My father always toldme, “Son, stay on the positive. Anyonecan be negative. But it takes someonewho is willing to buck the tide to bepositive.”Have you noticed how many negativepeople there are in the world? Mostof the news reports we hear are negative.Rarely does the TV news featurea positive, uplifting story. Instead, weare bombarded with violence, recessionworries, health concerns, high gasprices, and so forth.Anyone can be negative, but let’sdetermine to be positive. Refuse to bepart of the wrecking crew; instead, bea part of the building crew. You can see in Paul’s writings thathe always built up and encouraged thebelievers.ROMANS 8:35–39 (NIV)35 Who shall separate us from thelove of Christ? Shall trouble orhardship or persecution or famineor nakedness or danger or sword?36 As it is written: “For your sakewe face death all day long;we are considered as sheepto be slaughtered.”37 No, in all these things weare more than conquerorsthrough him who loved us.38 For I am convinced thatneither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor thefuture, nor any powers,39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in allcreation, will be able toseparate us from the love ofGod that is in Christ Jesusour Lord. What is interesting aboutthis passage of Scripture isthat Paul was edifying thesesaints while he was in prison. Ifanyone had just cause to be negative,it was Paul. He faced extreme persecutionfor preaching the Gospel. Hewas beaten, shipwrecked, stoned, andthrown in prison. Yet in verse 37, Paulsaid he was more than a conquerorin every situation that he faced. Paulchose to be positive even in negativecircumstances. We are not on this earth by accident. And as we approach the returnof Christ, we need to be committed tobuild the Church of our Lord Jesus. It’stime to get out of our comfort zone andgo into the highways and byways toreach the lost.God has a plan for all of us and thatincludes building the Church by reachingthe lost. We are beacons of lightthat shine in dark places to illuminatethe pathway that leads to salvation.
