<strong>Job</strong> <strong>Description</strong><strong>Position</strong> <strong>Title</strong>: <strong>Public</strong> <strong>Information</strong> <strong>Officer</strong><strong>Department</strong>:Grants and Community RelationsDate: May 13, 2014 FLSA Status: Non-Exempt<strong>Position</strong> Overview:The <strong>Public</strong> <strong>Information</strong> <strong>Officer</strong> (PIO) develops internal and external communications, includingpublications (newsletters, annual reports, Career Focus), social media postings, press releases, andfeature stories for the college. Responsibilities include interviewing, writing, editing, proofreading,photography, and disseminating communications. The PIO collaborates closely with college faculty andstaff to ensure consistency in marketing messages and positioning strategies. The PIO develops andimplements marketing and public relations strategies, including traditional, new, digital, email andsocial media based on institutional goals, market characteristics, and budgeted resources.Required Qualifications:• A bachelor’s degree in journalism, English with writing and editing emphasis,technical/professional communications, public administration or related major.• A minimum of five years of work experience in journalism, public relations, communications, orrelated field.• Experience responding to media requests for information and developing media contacts andcommunicating with media personnel for news and feature coverage; writing and distributingmedia advisories and releases; connecting media to appropriate personnel within an organizationfor interviewing and information-sharing; and monitoring media outlets, including social mediaand blogs, for coverage mentioning, involving, and/or conveying information relevant to anorganization.• Strong interviewing, writing, editing, organizational and computer skills. (NOTE: Impeccableediting skills and adherence to the college Style Guide are essential.);• Working knowledge and understanding of graphic design, typography, layout, and printingspecifications relevant to the design and production of marketing materials;• Photography experience using digital cameras;• Ability to perform responsibilities in a timely and efficient manner as well as be reliable,resourceful, tactful, self-starting, flexible, and cooperative;• Good comfort level with public speaking and serving as an organization’s representative at publicand private functions;• Experience gathering, writing/editing, and disseminating information for Internet and websitecommunications; experience maintaining social media sites (preferably for a college) including,but not limited to, LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter accounts; and• Experience with relevant software applications, including Microsoft Office and graphic designsoftware.Preferred Qualifications:• Understanding and commitment to the educational opportunities and support services acommunity college offers students and prospective students;• Experience with brand development;


• Working knowledge of design and production of advertising materials;• Experience creating a media relations plan (including themes, identification of target audiences,and media selection) that built a strong relationship with media;• Knowledge of strategic planning process; and• Conversational fluency in Spanish.<strong>Position</strong> Expectations:• Work for Director of Grants & Community Relations and staff, as well as other college personnel asappropriate, to provide input to and maintain annual departmental plans aligned with the college’sstrategic plan;• Act as a college spokesperson for print, television, and radio news media as well as serve as thecollege’s liaison to the NCCCS Office for matters concerning marketing and public relations andassist with crisis communication for the college;• Assist in content development for the college website and secondary websites maintained by thecollege;• Create synergies among marketing team and other college departments and personnel andanticipate in, assist with, and/or direct special projects that help promote the college;• Work a 40-hour work-week as determined with the supervisor so that the PIO fulfills the assignedduties and responsibilities, including occasional evening and weekend hours. (NOTE: Summerschedule will vary to enable four-day work week.);• Travel frequently within Union and Anson counties and infrequently regionally and statewide.Application Procedures:To be considered for this position, the following materials must be submitted with the applicationpacket.
