of Greater Whitbourne Page 3FromtheRectorHappy Easter to all our readers. It isn’t always possible to predict how people aregoing to react. Some people who seem very ordinaryand timid most of the time turn out to besuperb in a crisis, while the person we all thoughtwould be brave goes to pieces completely. Somepeople cope philosophically with sadness and lossbut are totally thrown by unexpected happiness orgood fortune, as though it somehow disturbs theirwhole understanding of how the world is supposedto be. Some people can only be at ease when theyare in charge of a situation, and some can’t copewith responsibility at all but are fine if they’re toldwhat to do. People are all different. So it is only to be expected that people reacted verydifferently to the death and resurrection of Jesus. Some of Jesus’ followers had clearly been expectingthe worst for some time before the crucifixion. Itsounds as though some of the women, at least, hadalready made preparations for his death, hadbrought the spices they would need to anoint thebody, and had detailed someone to watch out afterthe crucifixion and see where Jesus was to beburied.Perhaps this group of people never really expectedthat Jesus would succeed. They loved him andbelieved in him, but they knew the world too well. They knew people’s cynicism and selfishness, andso they knew that Jesus would be rejected andkilled, eventually. Sad, but not surprised, they setoff to take care of the corpse. So they are thrown into disorder and terror whenthey find the empty tomb and the angel. Hope andnew life were not part of their plan.Other disciples were sure, right up to the lastminute, that Jesus would pull some spectaculartrick out of the bag and save himself. They hadseen him do so many miraculous things, after all.So as it became clear that nothing was going tohappen to save Jesus, that he really was going todie, their world was turned upside down, and theyscattered in devastated disarray.People’s reactions to the resurrection are just asvaried. For Peter and the beloved disciple, the darkmouth of the cave is a channel for the rebirth ofhope. They had been right about Jesus: he did haveone more spectacular miracle to perform after all. They see the tomb and run to spread the goodnews. But for Mary, the black hole of the empty tomb isstill about loss. Where is the dead body on whichshe had intended to lavish her loving tears? She isso far gone in the grief that she had been expectingfor so long that she cannot feel hope until she seesJesus with her own eyes.People are all different. Jesus knew that, and treatedthem accordingly. God knows that, because hemade us. But we who want to proclaim the goodnews of the risen Lord don’t always remember howdifferent people are. What makes each one of us come to faith in Christand go on believing and trusting in his new life willvary from person to person. Jesus can be encounteredin many different ways. Some need to meetJesus in grief, some in hope, some in human touch, some in rational argument, some in anger at thecruelty of the world. Jesus wants to meet everyonewhere they can find him, so that all may share inhis risen life. There isn’t a package deal, only newlife.David HowellRectorThe Parish of Greater WhitbourneGOOD FRIDAY ACTIVITY MORNING PLANSThe Activity Morning for children will be runningagain this year on Good Friday, 10th April, from10am until 12.30pm in Whitbourne Church.
