<strong>of</strong> <strong>Greater</strong> <strong>Whitbourne</strong> Page 5Hedges get expert treatmentThe whine <strong>of</strong> the chainsawechoed round <strong>Whitbourne</strong> on thefirst Saturday in March, when the<strong>Parish</strong> Hedging Competition tookplace at Churchfields, courtesy<strong>of</strong> Chris and Ann Roberts.Organiser George Bevan, whothanked the Robertses for theirhospitality, also thanked JennyMitchel and Ruth Neville for runningthe cake stall on the day ,and Mrs Betty Large for her cateringand support.He said: “We were well-supportedfrom outside the parish and weraised more than £598 for theCounty Air Ambulance, whichwas very good. We had a greatday for it, and I was glad that somany people entered.”Contestants had some wildhedges to work with, skilfullytaming them in very short order.About 90 people came to watchthe experts at work - next year,the contest, which drew entrantsfrom the Midlands, Wales and theCotswolds, will take place atRosemore, courtesy <strong>of</strong> Mr Ge<strong>of</strong>fHolborow.Denise Kerwood and Rachel Dixon fromLeominster came second in the ladies contestHost Chris Roberts, organiser George Bevan andjudge Mr A Holding go through the results.Rob Large and Mike Jenkins from Cheltenham wonthe Novice prizeRita Jones from Felisfach, Brecon, winner <strong>of</strong>the ladies contestGlyn Arrasmith from Glasbury wins the open prize.Nearly there - Rita Jones completes her section<strong>of</strong> hedge prior to the judging
