> Letter from the President and the Director
At the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, we embrace the idea that art
and museums can transform lives, and over the fiscal year ending June 30, 2008,
we challenged our audiences with fresh ways of seeing, thinking, and engaging
with the world. No recent exhibition exemplifies that philosophy more than
Robert Irwin: Primaries and Secondaries. The large, light-filled spaces of the Joan
and Irwin Jacobs Building and 1001 Kettner galleries in downtown San Diego
were both particularly well suited to show Irwin’s work to its best advantage. The
artist made use of his singular knowledge of the galleries he helped design at
1001 Kettner and he responded brilliantly to the new environment in the Jacobs
Building with several new works that premiered in the exhibition. Working for
months in the Robert Caplan Artist-in-Residence Studio, Irwin experimented
with new concepts and ideas, ultimately creating the luminous Light and Space
artwork that was a highlight of the exhibition and a premiere example of how
MCASD continues to be a laboratory for artists to experiment with new forms of
visual expression.
As the region’s foremost forum for presenting the art of our time, MCASD served
more visitors than ever before in FY2008—193,428 in total—and continued to
reach new audiences. During this period, the Museum presented 17 exhibitions at
its downtown and La Jolla locations, acquired 45 artworks for the collection, and
provided a range of innovative and informative education programs for visitors of
all ages.
Thanks to the generous support of Qualcomm, MCASD continued to offer free
admission to everyone ages 25 and under. While the Museum has long been free
to children 12 and under, with this program we are signaling to young people that
we want them to experience all that MCASD has to offer. The program has been
an unqualified success: our attendance among 18- to 25-year-olds has grown
124% since the inception of this free admission program in January 2007.
The Museum’s artistic and educational achievements are realized because
of the leadership and philanthropic commitment of the Board of Trustees;
the exceptionally generous support of MCASD’s many Donors, Members, and
Supporters; and the dedication and talent of the Museum’s staff. We thank them
all for continuing to inspire us to new levels of excellence.
We are proud of MCASD’s contributions to our community and to the field of
contemporary art, and we look forward to continuing to engage and inspire
audiences with innovative artistic programming in the years to come.
July 5 > Graphic Identity
TNT got graphic with some inspiration from
the work of artist Ryan McGinness, who fuses
influences such as corporate logos, graphic
design, graffiti, and art history into his work.
San Diego design icons Don Hollis and Dylan
Jones, the duo behind Little Italy’s quirky
design boutique, Subtext, led a discussion
on graphic art—old and new, corporate and
underground. Attendees participated in a
“Which Pantone color are you?” interactive
activity and made their personal mark in a
collaborative collage. Live music was provided
by The Brisbanes and The Prayers.
August 2 > High Drama
Inspired by artist Robert Therrien’s giant
table and chair sculptures, TNT was larger
than life. Renowned scholar and UCSD
Professor of Art History, Norman Bryson, led
a talk on Therrien’s work. Throughout the
night, TNT-goers tried their luck at musical
chairs with live melodies by the Teeny Tiny
Pit Orchestra. They also enjoyed rare, vintage
cartoons (one of the artist’s inspirations) and
in the spirit of Therrien’s sculptural whimsy,
created their own flying mustache-on-astick—an
object that is all at once a puppet
and a mask, a bird and a mustache. Plus, live
local bands ¡Society!, Fantastic Magic, and DJ
duo Softy performed.
TNT celebrated its fifth anniversary, taking its
cue from Cerca Series artist Peter Simensky’s
alternative currency Neutral Capital.
Attendees heard the artist speak about his
work, then, created their own museum-ina-matchbox,
inspired by Simensky’s Neutral
The night ended with live jailhouse rock
and blues music by Diablo Dimes and the
Bloodhounds.
TNT-goers grabbed a front-row seat to
view original designs inspired by music and
technology. Select designers from Tijuana
and San Diego—including Acamonchi, Tania
Candiani, EXIST1981, Grammatique, Mari Morales,
Trista Roland, Jorge Sanchez, Sy, and
Jorge Tellaeche—showcased their work to the
sounds of BigStereo’s Rchrd Oh?!. The night
continued with a performance by electronic
sound-art duo Beatrix*Jar.
November 1 > Black and White
Inspired by the monochromatic works
of Robert Irwin, TNT revealed itself as a
black-and-white masquerade. TNT-goers
were encouraged to bring their own mask
or make one at the Museum. With a diverse
mix of events, the night was full of beautiful
contrasts. The word “Zen” has been associated
with Irwin’s work and artistic practice,
which participants explored via meditation in
the galleries and workshops led by the Matrix
Mandala Garden and the Dharma Bums.
There were also live performances from
all-girl cover band Wild Weekend and local
indie-electro duo Qu’est-ce Que C’est.
shined in a brilliant end-of-the-year holiday
bash. As the night unfolded, visitors experienced
a spectrum of activities, including a
kaleidoscope-making activity and colorful live
performances by The SoftLightes and Red
Pony Clock, plus DJ grooves by Dr. Indulgent.

guest musicians created impromptu scores
to vintage home movies found at garage
sales, courtesy of the Found Film Jam.
TNT-goers also made their own pet rock,
a 1970s mega-fad. Visitors caught the San
PROGRAMS FOR TEENS
Streaming Dialogues
FY08 marked the beginning of MCASD’s partnership with High Tech High Media
Arts to pilot an academic-year teen program based at the Museum’s downtown
location. The program provided the opportunity for selected HTHMA students
to research, meet, interview, and film artists whose work was on view in current
exhibitions. The students’ artist interviews were converted to video podcasts and
posted on the Museum’s iTunes page.
In the fall of 2007, High Tech High Media Arts juniors Zachary Small, Hunter
Moskowitz, and Walker LaFee interviewed artists Robert Irwin, Dario Robleto,
and Julio César Morales. The trio
participated in twice-weekly workshops
with MCASD staff members and filmmaker
Nathan Gulick to hone their filming,
editing, and interviewing techniques in
preparation for their artist interviews.
In the spring of 2008, High Tech High
students Erin Bell, Ross Cummings, and
Andres Navarrete interviewed artists
Roman de Salvo, Nina Katchadourian, and
Joshua Mosley. Each semester culminated
with a public screening of the teens’ films
at the Museum.
Grants from private foundations and government agencies provide an important
base of support for operations as well as for special projects, and MCASD has an
outstanding record of achievement with these competitive philanthropic organizations.
In FY08, the Museum entered its third year of a major three-year grant
from The James Irvine Foundation ($500,000), which provided vital support for
the transition into the new downtown facilities. The James Irvine Foundation
gave MCASD a grant for long-range strategic planning, as well. Grants were
also received from The San Diego Foundation; The Parker Foundation; Highland
Street Foundation; The Henry Luce Foundation; Mandell Weiss Foundation; LLWW
Foundaton; The Nimoy Foundation; Thomas C. Ackerman Foundation; mediaThe
Foundation, inc.; and the Weingart-Price Fund.
Government agencies are also very important to the Museum’s operational
well-being. The City of San Diego, through the Commission for Arts and Culture,
is MCASD’s most significant government supporter, with a grant of $315,002.
MCASD is grateful to Mayor Jerry Sanders and members of the City Council for
their continued endorsement and support of the Commission, which is so vital
to all of San Diego’s arts and culture organizations. The County of San Diego is
also an important funder, and the Museum is grateful to Supervisors Pam Slater-
Price, Ron Roberts, and Greg Cox, who made a $65,000 grant. Several government
agencies made grants toward upcoming exhibitions, with the Australian
introduction to Financial Highlights
This report was prepared by the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego
(MCASD) from its FY2008 financial statements, which were audited by Mayer
Hoffman McCann PC.
All debt and equity securities are recorded at fair market value. Realized
gains and losses arising from the sale of investments are based upon the original
cost of the security. Property and equipment purchases are recorded at cost. Depreciation
and amortization of assets are calculated by the straight line method
over the estimated useful lives of the related assets. Depreciation expense was
approximately $1,063,000 for FY2008.
In accordance with industry practice, the Museum’s collection, which has
been acquired through purchases and contributions since MCASD’s inception, is
not recognized as an asset on the statement of financial position. Purchases of
collection items are recorded as decreases in unrestricted net assets in the year
in which the items are acquired. Contributed collection items are not reflected on
the financial statements. Proceeds from deaccessions or insurance recoveries are
reflected as increases in the appropriate net asset classes.
The complete audited financial statements, including the related notes and
auditor’s report, are available upon written request.
