Dear Friends –
I want to share a story that I recently read—
“How We Grow”
In the town of Chelm, a magical, mythical place
where the people are very pious and very Jewish
but not necessarily very smart, two citizens were
engaged in an argument about how people grow.
One gentleman was convinced that people grow
from the ground up; the other was just as sure that they
grow from the head down.
Each gentleman was able to cite evidence to support
his opinion. The gentleman who believed that people
grow from the ground up said, “Just look at the army as
it marches by, and you’ll see that I am right. None of the
soldiers’ heads is at the same level, but all the soldiers
have their feet on the ground. That is proof that people
grow from the ground up.”
The other gentleman argued that if you look at the members
of the marching band as they pass by, you’ll see that the pants of
their uniforms don’t all reach their shoes. Some of the pants are
a little long, and some are a little short. That, he argued, surely

opening story I want

Brotherhood will be

Mother’s Day event on
May 9. This year, unlike
previous years, we
have something very
different. The breakfast
will be catered by our

of you. In addition, this
year’s entertainment
will be some of the best FAU Student Musicians and
Vocalists that you have ever had the experience of hearing.

Since the two gentlemen couldn’t resolve their
disagreement, they went to see the rabbi. Each
man explained his belief about the method by
which human beings grow.
The rabbi listened to them both and said, “My
fair gentlemen, it is not that humans grow from
the top down or from the bottom up. It is true
only that they grow from the inside out.”
This story suggests that what we are like on the inside
affects what we are like on the outside. “So if we have
good hearts, and are caring, considerate, and if we are
thoughtful people, what will be evident on the outside are
acts of kindness, charity, good deeds, and other actions that
help make the world a better place.”
Brotherhood’s vision clearly embraces this path and
through our programs, initiatives, and community service,
along with your participation and involvement we truly
represent the essence of the above. If you haven’t joined

fishing event – june 2010
Once again we are going to have an encore of the amazing
Fishing event we held last August. The details are being
worked out but the anticipated date will be Sunday, June
