As we prepare for the end of the school year, don’t forget about the
wonderful things that will be happening in May. On May 16th, 30 of
our teens will confirm their commitment to Judaism in our beautiful
Confirmation service. This service consists of writings and reflections
written by the teens as they experienced a year of learning, growing,
and connecting. Don’t miss this inspiring service held at 1:00 PM on
May 16th in the Sanctuary on the Main Campus.
As May rolls into June and the Florida summer approaches most
of our students will be spending more time in the pool than in a
classroom. This more relaxed time does not have to be without
Jewish influences and learning. Most secular schools have summer
reading lists to encourage academic skills and development during
the summer months. Religious education is no different. Although
some may not be in a formal religious setting over the summer,
being Jewish is a life long commitment. We know that children can
lose important academic skills acquired over the school year, so
why not incorporate Jewish activities into your summer plans.
Many of our children go to camps which are either exclusively
Jewish or have large Jewish populations. This summer Temple
Beth El will be represented at five camps which are part of the
URJ camping system: Camp Coleman, Camp Jacobs, Camp Kutz
Camp Eisner, and the newest URJ camp, 6 Points Sports Academy.
These campers will truly be living Jewishly 24/7. We wish all of
our campers a summer filled with wonderful new experiences,
friendships that last a lifetime, and fun!!!
While at home take just a few minutes a day to help your family
be conscious of your Jewishness over the summer. These activities
will provide a simple Jewish challenge or discussion to do each day
that will leave a lasting impression.
• Pick a Jewish hero or heroine and play 20 questions with your
family.
• Go to the public library or the temple library. Check out a book
about a Jewish holiday or Jewish personality.
• Look at your books from religious school. Share with someone
in your family 3 things you learned in religious school last year.
• Have a meal in an Israeli restaurant. Be sure to use the Hebrew
you know.
• Judaism teaches respect for all creatures. Be sure your pet has
enough water all summer long.
• Find Israel on the globe or a map. Is it big or small? Share all of
the facts you know about Israel.
• Go through your toys. Take the toys you no longer want to a
homeless shelter or to someone in need.
• While on a car trip, play the A-Z Jewish word game. A is for
apple that we eat on Rosh Hashanah. B is for Bat Mitzvah when you
are 13….
• Make up your own family 10 commandments.
Wishing everyone a safe, relaxing summer.
