Greening Your Family
A Reference Guide to Safe Food, Personal
Care, and Cleaning Products
Lindsey Carmichael
Lindsey Carmichael, mother and public health professional,
has created an easy, eco-friendly guide for parents and individuals,
to assist them in making informed decisions about
the safety of consumable products. Perfect to slip into a grocery
cart and consult while shopping, Greening Your Family
offers busy families an important tool they can use for optimal
health. This guide is unique as it offers an overview of
three areas; cleaning products, foods, and personal care
products. Many of these products contain chemicals that are
potentially harmful to human health, particularly the health
of children. Many Americans are unaware of the hazards they
face each time they clean the bathroom, brush their teeth, or
shampoo their hair.
In 2002, when her young son developed asthma, Lindsey
embarked on a journey of discovery that began with an
extensive research process, and led her to receive a Master’s
degree in Public Health. Along the way, she gained a perspective
about the dangers that lurk in many of our household
consumable products. She was shocked to learn that in
America, more so than in any other industrialized nation, we
are often the guinea pigs when it comes to product safety.
The good news is that there are safe options available, and
Carmichael explains these options clearly. With over thirty
charts that present information in an easy to follow format,
Lindsey provides recipes for creating safe cleaners, and offers
many web-based resources.
“When considering the breadth of options for cleaning
products, food selections, and personal care products, Greening
Your Family, is an invaluable resource … (and) an essential
guide to anyone who is looking to minimize the impact
of chemicals on their lives,” says Rosemary M. Caron, PhD,
MPH Program Director for the Department of Health Management
and Policy at the University of New Hampshire.
Today Lindsey’s son is a healthy, active child and she has
become a sought-after speaker, reaching out to support
American families in their desire to live healthy, green lives.
Lindsey Carmichael has worked in the healthcare field for
fifteen years and is a frequent speaker about healthy, green
living. She has a B.A. in English from the University of Vermont
and a Masters of Public Health from from the University
of New Hampshire. Lindsey lives with her husband and
son on the New Hampshire Seacoast.
