IntroductionModern motor vehicles are characterised by amultitude of electrical and electronic systems, whichregulate the vehicle's operation, increase vehiclesafety and driving comfort and support the driver indriving the vehicle.Interaction between these systems can only functionif they respond to each other. For example, the ABSand ESP control unit must be able to instruct theengine control unit to reduce the engine's output if thisis made necessary by a corresponding drivingsituation. Today, this information is extensivelyexchanged in digital form via fast data bus systems. As a result of this high technical standard, it isbecoming increasingly important to update thevehicle systems' software via on-line workshop linksand to ensure that this is kept up-to-date.In view of this, the Eos, the most recent developmentin the convertible range, also reveals a multitude ofvehicle systems which exchange information,as part of controlling the convertible roof, to ensuresafe and flawless convertible roof operation. In theEos, the new immobilizer IV is one of those systemswhich requires an on-line workshop link to downloaddata to adapt the system.S379_0284

In terms of its electrical system, the Eos offers the following special features, some of which originate from thevehicle's conception as a coupé convertible:●●●Convertible roof control systemThis contains the hydraulic and electric drive, theconvertible roof sensor system and communicationwith other vehicle systems via CAN data bus.Interior monitoring systemModern microwave technology guaranteesprotection against theft even when the convertibleroof is open.ImmobilizerThe Eos is equipped with the immobilizer IV withdownload function. An on-line link is theprerequisite for adapting this.In contrast to the Passat 2006, in which the systemwas fitted for the first time, the immobilizer IV is notequipped with an electric steering column lock.●●●●Climate control systemThis gives consideration to the influence of ambientconditions when the convertible roof is open. The aerial conceptThanks to a new installation concept in therear lid, exterior and window aerials are no longernecessary.Rear lid assistAn extended Park Distance Control functionensures that the space required behind the vehiclefor the convertible roof's action is available.Electric easy entry functionComfortable entry and exiting to and from the rearseats thanks to an electric seat adjustment system.S379_0395

The vehicle electrical systemThe structure of the vehicle electrical systemInstallation locations of the electrical componentsTo implement the electrical functions, it was necessaryto completely redesign certain control unitsand to accordingly adapt other control unitsoriginating from the Golf platform. The vehicle electrical system's central component isthe vehicle electrical system control unit. In the Eos,this is located beneath the dash panel on the driver'sside. The electronics box in the engine compartmentcontains the main fuse holder and a relay carrier.Further relays are located on the vehicle electricalsystem control unit and the relay carrier on the vehicleelectrical system control unit bracket. The thermo-fusefor the externally guided sliding roof is alsolocated there.Driver side easy entry control unit(easy entry function)A further fuse holder is located at the left-hand sideof the dash panel. The convertible roof actuationsystem fuses are located together on the main fuseholder in the electronics box.Due to the vehicle-specific spatial conditions, the Eosis equipped with two 6V batteries instead of one12V battery if the 6-cylinder engine is installed.Electronics box with relaycarrier and fuse holder6

The vehicle electrical systemVoltage supplyDue to reasons of space depending on which engine is fitted, the Eos is equipped with two 6V absorbent matbatteries instead of the conventional 12V battery in the engine compartment. These are installed behind the rearseat backrest on the left and right-hand sides of the vehicle and wired in series via a connecting cable withdegassing pipe. This battery concept is used if engines requiring large amounts of space, e.g. the V6 engine, arefitted in the Eos.The following points must be observed under all circumstances in the event of repair and servicing:- When charging, checking or renewing, both 6V batteries must be treated as one 12V unit.- Only charge the modules to a maximum of 14.4Vwith voltage limitation.- Never charge or renew a 6V module individually.- 6V modules must always be evenly loaded. Neverconnect a consumer to just one module.- On disconnection, always loosen the body-sidenegative terminal first, as there is otherwise a riskof one 6V module's short-circuiting due to groundcontact.Vehicle electrical system positive connectionBattery module 1Cable for wiring the two batterymodules in seriesBattery module 2S379_077Pyrotechnical battery isolation systemBattery positive connection/battery isolation systemVehicle ground connection8

The battery is therefore leak-proof.- The absorbent mat battery has a highercold-starting output than conventional vehiclebatteries.- The battery modules are maintenance-free.When handling the 6V absorbent mat batteries in the Eos, note the information in the correspondingworkshop manuals under all circumstances.9

Data bus networkingThe vehicle electrical system in the CAN data busThe block diagram shows you which controlunits in the vehicle electrical systemcommunicate with each other via the CANor LIN data bus, in order to implement thedifferent vehicle systems. The schematic which is shown is merely anexample, as the precise number of control unitsin the CAN data bus systems is dependent onthe vehicle's equipment. An example of this isthe different sound packages or the vehicle'sbeing equipped with a direct shift gearbox or amanual gearbox.J604RJ533J364J285J334***J255As will be described in detail at a later point, communication via the CAN data bus isalso vital to actuation of the convertible roof.To obtain approval to open and close the roof, diverse pieces of information have to beexchanged between different vehicle systems,in order to guarantee maximum possible safetyand functionality.J412J503J525J345J446J519J393R78J527SDARS**J386G197**J388J256J387J389J572J57310

Convenience electronicsConvertible roof control systemThe involved electrical componentsTo guarantee flawless roof operation, not only do theCSC convertible roof's electronic components have tocommunicate with and react to each other, butextensive information also has to be exchanged withother control units and electronic components. For example, the convertible roof control unit has totransmit the command "Lower windows" or "Raisewindows" to the door control units. In turn, the doorcontrol units inform the convertible roof control unit ofthe position of the side windows. This is necessary, because the side windows have to be lowered beforethe roof begins to move so that they do not collidewith the moving parts of the convertible roof. The adjacent schematic shows all of the electroniccomponents and control units which communicatewith each other as part of the convertible roofcontrol system.More detailed information on theoperating conditions for roof movementcan be found in this issue as of page 38.LegendE40 Front left window regulator switchE53 Rear left window regulator switch, in driver doorE55 Rear right window regulator switch, in driver doorE81 Front right window regulator switch, in driver doorE107 Window regulator switch in front passenger doorE137 Convertible roof actuation buttonE189 Central switch for window regulators in driver doorE233 Rear lid remote release buttonE319 Fuel tank flap release buttonE325 Sunroof buttonF364 Luggage cover contact switchG555 Hydraulic pump temperature senderG556 Front sender for position of left roof memberG557 Front sender for position of right roof memberG558 Sender for left roof member lockedG559 Sender for right roof member lockedG560Left sender for rear window framelockedG561 Right sender for rear window framelockedG562 Sender for rear window frame openG563 Left sender for rear shelf lockedG564 Right sender for rear shelf lockedG565 Sender for roof stowedG566 Sender for left roof member flap openG567 Sender for right roof member flap openJ104 ABS control unitJ245 Sliding sunroof adjustment control unitJ255 Climatronic control unitJ256 Convertible roof actuation control unitJ285 Control unit with display in dash panel insertJ345 Trailer detector control unitJ386 Driver door control unitJ387 Front passenger door control unitJ388 Rear left door control unitJ389 Rear right door control unitJ393 Convenience system central control unitJ446 Parking aid control unitJ519 Onboard supply control unitJ533 Data bus diagnostic interfaceJ657 Power latching control unitN272 Power operated convertible roof valve 1N341 Power operated convertible roof valve 2N342 Power operated convertible roof valve 3V1 Sliding sunroof motorV26 Rear left window regulator motorV27 Rear right window regulator motorV118 Convertible roof actuation hydraulic pumpV147 Driver side window regulator motorV148 Front passenger side window regulator motorV329 Power latching motorab+cHydraulic unitDriver door control panels14

Depending on the length of time forwhich the button is pressed or pulled, movement iscarried out either automatically or manually. If, on opening, the button is held down for less than0.5 seconds, automatic movement which brings thesliding roof to the ventilation position and ends thereis started.Further actuation of the button for less than0.5 seconds starts a second automatic movement, which opend the sliding roof fully.S379_040Open sliding roofVentilation position.Automatic movement1x ☞

Convertible roof actuation buttonS379_038The convertible roof actuation button can also beactuated in two directions. Pressing and holdingopens the convertible roof if the conditions formovement are met. Pulling and holding closes theconvertible roof. If the button is released during roofmovement, the movement stops. If the button is not actuated again withinmax. 8 minutes, only closing is then possible. Aftermax. 9.5 minutes, the convertible roof is loweredautomatically in clocked stages, accompanied bya continuous gong, in the direction of the nearestcentre of gravity position. This means that, dependingon the position which the roof has reached, loweringis carried out in the "opening" or "closing" direction,in accordance with gravity.Window regulator actuationIn convertible operation, it will often be the case thatall window regulators have to be actuatedsimultaneously. A central switch for window actuationis therefore necessary. This central switch for windowregulators in the driver door E189 is integrated intothe window actuation button panelon the driver's side. Its signal runs directly to the convertible roof actuationcontrol unit, and from there to the individual doorcontrol units.S379_041The side windows must be completely lowered so asnot to impede or damage the convertible roofmodules during their movement sequence.17

Convenience electronicsRoof status indicator, low-line versionS379_042S379_155GongIn this variant , communication between theconvertible top control system and the driver takesplace via an indicator symbol in the dash panel insertand an acoustic signal sender. The symbol lights upduring roof movement. The driver is informed that theend position has been reached via a gong andextinguishment of the indicator symbol.A flashing indicator symbol indicates a system fault inthe convertible roof control system, e.g. an incorrectlyinserted luggage cover.During vehicle operation, a flashing symbol withrepeated gong indicates that the convertible roof isnot fully closed or stowed.Convertible roof actuation control unit fault messages are only shown on the display when theconvertible roof is actuated. The exception to this is a fault in the roof member locked senders.Failure of these is immediately displayed by setting the indicator symbol and with the"System fault – close convertible roof" message, to encourage the driver to check the situation.18

After reaching anend position, the gong is also sounded and theindicator symbol extinguished in this case. Dependingon the status of the convertible roof, "convertible roofopened" or "convertible roof closed" is displayed inthe text field.During vehicle operation, a flashing symbol withrepeated gong indicates that the convertible roof isnot fully closed or stowed. The following information is shown as notesor fault messages in the display:Notes- Close luggage cover- Close rear lid- Obstacle in rear area- Convertible roof overheating- Speed too high- Sliding roof overheating- Convertible roof open- Convertible roof closed- Convertible roof operation- Continue convertible roof operationFault messages- Close side windows- Close sliding roof- Trailer – no convertible roof operation- Open rear lock- System fault – close convertible roof- System fault – open convertible roof- System fault - no convertible roof operation- Convertible roof defective!Operating instructions.19
