8Downtown Streetscape Tiles Will Have aNew Brochure and MapThe Council Bluffs Convention and VisitorsBureau (CVB) has been awarded $1,000 from theWestern Iowa Tourism Region to provide a portionof the funding for brochures to promote downtownstreetscape tiles. The tiles are in brickwork in the100 and 200 blocks of West Broadway. Turn of thecentury postcards depicting Council Bluffs have beenreproduced in colorful ceramic tiles.The Western Iowa Tourism Region works withthe Iowa Economic Development Authority to offercompetitive grants to assist local events, attractions,and businesses with promotion, advertising, andeducational programming. “The Region offers thesefunds to create opportunities for increasing tourism inour communities,” said Shirley Phillips, President ofthe Western Iowa Tourism Region.A total of $26,500 was awarded this cycle to localorganizations in the 36 county Region of WesternIowa for tourism projects. The Council Bluffs CVBreceived the maximum grant allowed. Volunteers fromthe Region evaluate the grant applications from theirpeers. Beth Waddle, Promotion Grant Chairperson,noted, “the selection of grant recipients is anincreasingly difficult task.”Michelle Walker, RegionalDirector, reports that WesternIowa continues to see an increasein the significance of tourismthrough tax receipts and jobs.“We are very pleased to beawarded this grant. The CVBcan now print a brochure andmap outlining the location ofthe streetscape tiles. This willbe a companion piece to thesidewalk mosaic brochurewe printed last year. Bothconvention & visitors bureaudocuments outline walking tours of downtownCouncil Bluffs, which are free activities and a fun,visual way to learn about Council Bluffs history andpast,” said Kathy Fiscus, Director of Special Projectsfor the Convention and Visitors Bureau.Completion of the new brochure is slated for earlyspring.
