Dr Subbarao wasthe Finance Secretary in the Ministry <strong>of</strong>Finance, Government <strong>of</strong> India.Born on August 11, 1949, Dr Subbaraoholds a B.Sc (Hons) in Physics from theIndian <strong>Institute</strong> <strong>of</strong> Technology, Kharagpurand M.Sc in Physics from the Indian<strong>Institute</strong> <strong>of</strong> Technology, Kanpur. DrSubbarao also holds an MS degree inEconomics from Ohio State University.He was a Humphrey fellow at MIT during1982-83. He has a Ph.D. in Economicswith thesis on fiscal reforms at the subnationallevel. Dr Subbarao was a topper inthe All India Civil Service examination forentry into Indian Administrative Servicesand Indian Foreign Services in 1972. Hewas one <strong>of</strong> the first IITians to join the civilserviceDr Subbarao has earlier been Secretary tothe Prime Minister's Economic AdvisoryCouncil (2005-2007), lead economist inthe World Bank (1999-2004), FinanceSecretary to the Government <strong>of</strong> AndhraPradesh (1993-98) and Joint Secretaryin the Department <strong>of</strong> Economic Affairs,Ministry <strong>of</strong> Finance, Government <strong>of</strong> India(1988-1993).Dr Subbarao has wide experience in publicfinance. In the World Bank, he workedon issues <strong>of</strong> public finance in countriesDr D SubbaraoGovernor, Reserve Bank <strong>of</strong> India<strong>of</strong> Africa and East Asia. He managed aflagship study on decentralization acrossmajor countries <strong>of</strong> East Asia includingChina, Indonesia, Vietnam, Philippines andCambodia. Dr Subbarao was also involvedin initiation <strong>of</strong> fiscal reforms at the statelevel. Dr Subbarao has written extensivelyon issues in public finance, decentralizationand political economy <strong>of</strong> reforms.<strong>IPE</strong> is privileged to host a distinguishedlecture 0n 7 June 2013 by such an eminentpersonality as Dr D Subbarao who hassuccessfully steered India’s monetary andfiscal regulatory system and thus put oureconomy on a ground , duly reigning in thehitherto seemingly elusive inflation3


GOLDEN JUBILEE CELEBRATIONSFor commemorating Creation <strong>of</strong> the Goldenlegacy & Milestones <strong>of</strong> the Golden journeyThe Golden legacyThe Indian Council <strong>of</strong> Social ScienceResearch (ICSSR), Ministry <strong>of</strong> HumanResource Development, Government <strong>of</strong>India, recognized the <strong>Institute</strong> as a A Centre<strong>of</strong> Excellence in social science researchin 1976. The <strong>Institute</strong> is partly funded bythe ICSSR and the Government <strong>of</strong> AndhraPradesh.The Golden JourneyIn the Golden journey <strong>of</strong> 50 years,comencing in 1964 the <strong>Institute</strong> haswidened the area <strong>of</strong> its works toencompass quiet a few functional verticals.While the seed was sown to be a researchinstitute, the <strong>Institute</strong> branched out soon toexpand to undertake consultancy for PEsand also responding to the training needs<strong>of</strong> the executives <strong>of</strong> PEs apart from variouseducational programmes.The educational programmes <strong>of</strong> the<strong>Institute</strong> have their basic foundation in thevarious research, training and consultancyactivities undertaken by the <strong>Institute</strong>for public and private organizations /industries over the last four decades. Theprogrammes are the natural extension <strong>of</strong>the educational activities <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Institute</strong>from the short term managementeducation to the long-term one and havelead to vertical integration <strong>of</strong> the researchfunction. The insights into managementeducation began in 1981 with thecommencement <strong>of</strong> a 3-year part time MBA(PE) programme for practicing managers.In the year 1995, the <strong>Institute</strong> started atwo-year full time Post Graduate Diplomain Business Management (PGDM),recognized as equivalent to MBA by theAssociation <strong>of</strong> Indian Universities (AIU),to provide skilled human resources tomeet the requirements <strong>of</strong> the Industry.Consolidating on the experience and tomeet the needs <strong>of</strong> the industry, the <strong>Institute</strong>commenced a two-year full time PostGraduate Diploma in Management - Retailand Marketing (PGDM-RM) in 2007, PostGraduate Diploma in Management -Banking, Insurance and Financial Services(PGDM-BIF) in 2008, Post Gradue Diplomain Management - International Business(PGDM-IB) and Post Graduate Diploma inManagement - Bio-Technology (PGDM-BT)in 2009. Institution also started ExecutivePGDM in 2009.Recently, two more streams <strong>of</strong> postgraduate Diplomas in the areas <strong>of</strong> HumanResource Management (PGDM-HRM)and in Healthcare Management (PGDM –HCM) have been assed. The <strong>Institute</strong>has conducted nearly 100 programs for IASand IFS cadre covering more than1600 civilservants. In addition, over 1,000 MDPs andin-company programs were organized formore than 40000 practicing managers <strong>of</strong> thecorporate sector.These programs fall under the categories <strong>of</strong>General Management, Project Planning andAppraisal, Human Resources Development,Finance, Marketing, Corporate Planning,Information Technology and Restructuring <strong>of</strong><strong>Enterprise</strong>s. The <strong>Institute</strong> has also conductedseveral seminars, conferences and otherprograms sponsored by various National /International agencies.Objectives• Promote research in economics,commerce, administrative andmanagement sciences, energy,urban management, health sciences,biotechnology, IT, trade, intellectualproperty rights and behavioralsciences.• Conduct training courses, conferences,seminars, management developmentprograms and undertake consultancy.• Provide for publication <strong>of</strong> researchpapers, books, journals and othermaterial concerning social sciences.• Establish and maintain libraries andinformation services to facilitate thestudy <strong>of</strong> public / private enterprises.• Cooperate with approved institutionsand interested bodies in furtherance <strong>of</strong>studies on public / private enterprises.• Constitute, or cause to be constituted,regional centers at convenient placesin India to promote the objectives <strong>of</strong>the society.To achieve these objectives, the <strong>Institute</strong>is expanding the infrastructure bybuilding an academic block with 15ultra modern classrooms and digitallabs. The institute while renovating theexisting hostels also plans to build anew hostel with 500 rooms coveringan area <strong>of</strong> 100000 sq ft. The <strong>Institute</strong>is also restructuring its staff by addingmore members in order to be one <strong>of</strong> thefirst 15 top management institutes inthe country with integrated approach<strong>of</strong> research, training, consulting andteaching providing inputs to industry,government, NGOs and internationalorganizations.Over the last 46 years, the <strong>Institute</strong>has widened the area <strong>of</strong> its work.Beginning with Research, it is a pioneerin Consultancy, Executive Training andManagement Education.89


A Few MilestonesResearch and Consultancy - A Center <strong>of</strong> Excellence• Established in 1964• Until the mid nineteen fiftees the focus wason Management training and developmentand consultancy for about 3 decades, whilemanagement education was not a primeactivity with only a part-time programme,MBA (PE), launched around the mideighties.• In 1995, <strong>IPE</strong> launched its first full-timepost-graduate programme, namely PGDM,under the Autonomous Institution categoryas approved by AICTE, the governmentbody in India which evaluates and grantsapproval for launching managementeducation programmes in India• Simultaneously, even research activity wasbeing given and impetus thereabouts.<strong>IPE</strong>’s Evolution into one <strong>of</strong> India’sPremier B-Schools:• From 2007 onwards, <strong>IPE</strong> went on to launchPGDM programmes which were aimed atserving the interests <strong>of</strong> different businesssectors <strong>of</strong> the economy, namely PGDMsin Retail & Marketing (R&M), Banking,Insurance & Finance (BIF), InternationalBusiness (IB), Human ResourceManagement (HRM) , etc.Growth in programmes and in intake <strong>of</strong>students has therefore been significantin the last five years. The intake in PGDMprogrammes, which was only 120 till 2007,now stands at 360.• <strong>IPE</strong> now ranks among the top twenty (20)B-Schools in India.• For publications, <strong>IPE</strong> ranks first in thecountry.• For “intellectual capital”, <strong>IPE</strong> ranksamong the top five in the country, with anincreasing number <strong>of</strong> faculty memberswhich now stands at fifty, with most <strong>of</strong>them possessing doctoral degrees / PhDsfrom well known institutions such as IIMs /IITs and universities.• <strong>IPE</strong> has been awarded ManagementDevelopment Programmes as well asresearch projects and consultancyassignments by numerous enterprisesin India, many <strong>of</strong> which rank amongstthe Maharatna / Navratna / Miniratnacategories. In fact <strong>IPE</strong> gets frequentnomination <strong>of</strong> executives for its numerousprogrammes for the top managementcadres including Directors <strong>of</strong> the CorporateBoards., with such programmes conductedacross India at Delhi, Mumbai, etc.• <strong>IPE</strong> has been recognized by eightdifferent universities for conducting PhDprogrammes and guiding the students whoregister for such programmes.• A spacious library which stocks as manyas 50,000 books, 150 journals whichinclude international journals, as alsonumerous reports such as Annual Reports<strong>of</strong> the various <strong>Public</strong> <strong>Enterprise</strong>s in India• The curriculum design for the PGDMprogrammes is updated every year tocontain state-<strong>of</strong>-the-art subjects whichimprove the chances for better placementsin the industry.• List <strong>of</strong> recruiters comprises top corporatesand leading emerging business houses /companies.INTERNATIONAL LINKAGES<strong>IPE</strong> also has developed internationallinkages/ MoUs such as with University <strong>of</strong>Ljubljana, Slovenia, Kyungpook University,Korea, Waikato University, New Zealand,Rotterdam School <strong>of</strong> Management / INPAOT,The Netherlands, International AffairsDivision <strong>of</strong> Getulio Vargas Foundation, Brazil,University Tun Abdul Razak, Kuala Lumpur,EGADE Business School, Mexico, etc.At <strong>IPE</strong>, we had two pr<strong>of</strong>essors from theglobally renowned Erasmus University /Rotterdam School <strong>of</strong> Management, namely,Emeritus Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Felix Jansez and Pr<strong>of</strong>.Murthy Halemane on <strong>IPE</strong> campus for a10– day full course on “ EntrepreneurialInnovation “ for the <strong>IPE</strong> students in August,2010. Also, in December 2012, a visitingpr<strong>of</strong>essor from EGADE Business Schoolconducted four different Certificate Coursesfor the students at <strong>IPE</strong> campus.The quality <strong>of</strong> its academics, research,consultancy and training has enabled <strong>IPE</strong>to forge collaborations with the aforesaidinternational institutions and a few morewhich are in the <strong>of</strong>fing.Pr<strong>of</strong> Murthy Halemane (Rotterdam School <strong>of</strong> Management, The Netherlands) andPr<strong>of</strong> Felix Janszen (Emeritus Pr<strong>of</strong>essor, Erasmus University, INPAQT, The Netherlands),rendering a 10-day course on ‘Entrepreneurial Innovation’ for <strong>IPE</strong> students in August 2011.In 1976, <strong>IPE</strong> was recognized as a ‘Center<strong>of</strong> Excellence’ in social science research byIndian Council <strong>of</strong> Social Science Research(ICSSR). It has completed nearly 150research and consultancy projects so far.The knowledge and insights that <strong>IPE</strong> hasgained in research have enabled it toundertake consultancy assignments fornational and international organizations.Consultancy is <strong>of</strong>fered in disciplines such asenterprise restructuring, industrial relations,power, biotechnology, poverty alleviation,privatization, quality management,manpower planning, work culture, etc.The quality <strong>of</strong> its academics, research,consultancy and training has enabled <strong>IPE</strong> t<strong>of</strong>orge MOUs / academic links with quite a fewworld renowned institutions / universities(including London Business School underthe auspices <strong>of</strong> the British Council), whichfacilitate student / faculty exchanges andcollaborative research and training projects.In June 2007, <strong>IPE</strong> was invited by the UnitedNations to make a presentation at the7th Global Forum held at Vienna by theInternational Association <strong>of</strong> Schools and<strong>Institute</strong>s in Administration.<strong>IPE</strong> was also recently invited by theNational University <strong>of</strong> Singapore to makea presentation on service delivery in thecontext <strong>of</strong> reforms and privatization <strong>of</strong> thepower sector in India. Our Upcoming New CampusTo further enhance the scope <strong>of</strong> its activities, <strong>IPE</strong> isexpanding its infrastructure facilities by building a newresidential campus at Shameerpet village, on the outskirts<strong>of</strong> Hyderabad.The sprawling 22-acre campus is located in a peacefullocality, surrounded by a reserve forest on one side andthe beautiful Shameerpet lake on the other.With a total built-up area <strong>of</strong> 5.50 lakh sq.ft., the campuswill house a state-<strong>of</strong>-the-art academic block, anadministration block, a modern library, an MDP block, afood court, an auditorium and several sports facilities.
