LAUDERDALE — Community members celebr<strong>at</strong>edthe F<strong>at</strong>her’s Day holiday to the extreme on June18.The Tribal Council and Board of Directors sponsoredan outing to Xtreme Indoor Karting, a popularhalf-mile, indoor European Bowman race kart track.F<strong>at</strong>hers in <strong>at</strong>tendance also received gifts fromthe offices of Hollywood Tribal Council Rep. Max B.Osceola Jr. and President Richard Bowers Jr.Rep. Osceola thought coming up with an inventiveplace and way to celebr<strong>at</strong>e f<strong>at</strong>hers would be a hit foreveryone.“I figured why not come to a place th<strong>at</strong> c<strong>at</strong>ers tomen, but also has something for everyone,” Rep. Osceolasaid. “It is a family place, it is indoors and wh<strong>at</strong> betterplace to be than somewhere like here?”Tribal citizen Mingo Jones, who brought his son,Lorenzo, to the event agreed.“It was a good place,” Jones said. “I was comfortablethere even though it was my first time there. Youcould enjoy and do wh<strong>at</strong> you wanted.”Racing participants, including Manny Baker, receivedtrophies depending on how well they did racing.Guests also celebr<strong>at</strong>ed the birthday of newly electedHollywood Tribal Board of Directors Rep. MarcellusOsceola Jr. <strong>at</strong> the event.The early 20th Century concept of honoring f<strong>at</strong>hersannually on the third Sunday of June came as a complementto Mother’s Day. F<strong>at</strong>her’s Day celebr<strong>at</strong>es f<strong>at</strong>herhoodand male parenting.The first observance of the day is believed to havebeen on July 5, 1908 in a church loc<strong>at</strong>ed in Fairmont,W.V.Xtreme Indoor Karting is a 90,000 square footfacility. The main draw, however, remains the 40 EuropeanBowman race karts th<strong>at</strong> race on a half-mile ofasphalt track. The karts reach speeds up to 45 miles perhour. LAUDERDALE — In celebr<strong>at</strong>ion of F<strong>at</strong>her’sDay, the Tribal seniors enjoyed lunch <strong>at</strong> one of South<strong>Florida</strong>’s most well-known restaurants, the 15th StreetFishery and Dockside Café, on June 19.Tribal Council Treasurer and first time p<strong>at</strong>ron MikeTiger said the e<strong>at</strong>ery was a hit for everyone.“Our seniors enjoyed the trip,” Tiger explained.“The fish was also good and delicious.”As a f<strong>at</strong>her himself, Tiger said the meaning behindthe outing is also significant.“[F<strong>at</strong>her’s Day] is important for a lot of people,” hesaid. “It actually brings back memories of my f<strong>at</strong>her. Hedefinitely died too young.”Owner of the 15th Street Fishery and DocksideCafé, Ted Drum, said he enjoyed the seniors’ visit andtook the opportunity to greet them and express his appreci<strong>at</strong>ionfor the <strong>Seminole</strong>s longstanding presence andperseverance in <strong>Florida</strong>.He also dedic<strong>at</strong>ed a room in the establishment to the<strong>Seminole</strong> Tribe. He said the pictures in the room, whichhe received through the Fort Lauderdale Historical Societyin years past, are intended to honor the Tribe.“As a kid growing up in Fort Lauderdale I was alwaysfascin<strong>at</strong>ed with the Tribe and had a lot of admir<strong>at</strong>ionfor them,” Drum pointed out. “We want this to betheir place on the river to continue to come to.”The 15th Street Fishery and Dockside Café is loc<strong>at</strong>eddirectly inside the city’s Lauderdale Marina forclose to 30 years. Each f<strong>at</strong>her receivedan opportunity to select the item of his choice.Raffles tickets were distributed and winners were rewardedwith <strong>Seminole</strong> jackets, vests, deluxe barbequegrills, a gym set and a recliner.As grand prize winners, Raymond Garza Sr. receiveda custom outdoor, we<strong>at</strong>herproof pool table andRalph Sanchez Jr. took home the 52 inch, high definition,fl<strong>at</strong> screen television.A professional photographer provided each of thefamilies with a group portrait to commemor<strong>at</strong>e the occasion.
