6C • The Seminole Tribune • July 31, 2009Seminoles Learn Disc Golf Tips from ProBY JUDY WEEKSFreelance ReporterBIG CYPRESS — World Champion disc golferGregg Hosfeld conducted a disc golf clinic on the temporarycourse in the Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Museum parkinglot on the morning of July 4.A man of many talents, Hosfeld is a runner, yogaenthusiast, professional juggler and comedy club entertainer,in addition to competing in disc golf competitionsaround the world.Grabbing the attention of his audience, Hosfeldopened the clinic with several disc golf tricks and thenprovided a quick history of the game.“Disc golf is one of the fastest growing sports,”Hosfeld said. “Played much like traditional golf, a discis thrown into a basket, as opposed to hitting a ballwith a club. Rules and challenges are similar to playingwith a ball and the object of the game is to get thedisc into the target in the least number of throws.”“The beauty of the game is the fact that it is notnecessary to be athletic, offers exercise, can be playedby people with limited mobility and stimulates thecompetitive spirit that we all share,” Hosfeld continued.“Using discs with a variety of sizes and density,players learn control and accuracy. The disc is manipulatedinto the target with the use of tilts, side armthrows, wrist snaps, back fists and creative spins.”The players formed a line across a fairway towatch a demonstration. Then they participated in practiceshots before dividing into groups of six and takingto the course. Experimenting with technique sometimesresulted in hilarious body positions, mishaps andfoul shots. Laughter followed the participants aroundthe course.Returning to the shade of the canopy, the playerseach received a T-shirt and disc to commemorate theevent.Assistant Big Cypress Recreation Dept. DirectorStan Frischman said: “This is the fourth time that discgolf has been played at Big Cypress and each time thenumber of players increases. What at first appeared tobe a setback, in the end worked to everyone’s advantageas the audience size tripled with the addition of the BigCypress children, who also benefited from the presentation.Juan Jose Marrufo, known as “Riata Man,” gave aterrific performance with his fancy dancing Andalusianhorse and extraordinary rope tricks. Accompanied byhis nephew, Raul, he provided a non-stop roping demonstrationfor more than 30 minutes without duplicatingany of his tricks.A fifth generation Mexican charro, or cowboy,Marrufo began manipulating ropes at an early age andcan quickly bring a coiled riata to life with a flick ofhis wrist.Explaining that riata is what Mexican people calla working cowboy’s rope, known as a lariat, he invitedsome of his spectators to join him in the arena to examineits waxed surface.
