Co-opsOn a shoestring Canada’s non-profit coops and artist run collectives have providedmuch below-the-line training for the non-traditional, non-union industry, and areoften on the leading creative edge. One huge international software companyrecently sought a coop’s expertise because of the coop’s innovative application ofpost-production music software. These filmmakers are always pushing the edgeand are often in the vanguard of content production for the new multi-platformparadigm. To meet future challenges we must be prepared to think outside thebox, and a more porous divide between the professional industry and our coopfilmmakers could benefit both sides.7) Recommendation – The workshops, creative incubators, and on-settraining opportunities provided by Canada’s formidable network of artistrun coops should move beyond happenstance to become a moreformalized, adequately financed program, used by the mainstreamindustry, and supported by government and the private sector.CHRC BTL TGA - 11/14/2008 -Page 8
